Twenty-five runners, mostly Modoc and Pit River ran seventy-one miles through historic Modoc territory to honor their ancestors.
In 1906, members of the Yokayo Rancheria threatened to file a suit against the University of California for digging up “the remains of human beings without proper permission,” and explored the possibility of bringing criminal charges against Alfred Kroeber, the de facto head of Berkeley’s anthropology department.
