SUMMARY:Future Imaginaries: Indigenous Art\, Fashion\, Technology
DESCRIPTION:September 7\, 2024 – June 21\, 2026 \nSamuel & Minna Grodin Gallery \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n\nFuture Imaginaries explores the rise of Futurism in contemporary Indigenous art as a means of enduring colonial trauma\, creating alternative futures and advocating for Indigenous technologies in a more inclusive present and sustainable future. Over 50 artworks are on display\, some interspersed throughout the museum\, creating unexpected encounters and dialogues between contemporary Indigenous creations and historic Autry works. Artists such as Andy Everson\, Ryan Singer and Neil Ambrose Smith wittily upend pop-culture icons by Indigenizing sci-fi characters and storylines; Wendy Red Star places Indigenous people in surreal spacescapes wearing fantastical regalia; Virgil Ortiz brings his own space odyssey\, ReVOlt 1680/2180\, to life in a new\, site-specific installation. By intermingling science fiction\, self-determination\, and Indigenous technologies across a diverse array of Native cultures\, Future Imaginaries envisions sovereign futures while countering historical myths and the ongoing impact of colonization\, including environmental degradation and toxic stereotypes.

SUMMARY:Rose B. Simpson: LEXICON
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together two seemingly distinct art forms: Pueblo pottery and classic cars. In 2014\, Rose B. Simpson\, a mixed-media artist from Santa Clara Pueblo\, New Mexico\, refurbished a 1985 Chevy El Camino\, transforming it with a black-on-black Tewa pottery motif. Simpson titled her work Maria in honor of renowned artist Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo\, 1887–1980)\, who popularized the distinctive black-on-black style. Ten years later\, this exhibition debuts Simpson’s second customized car\, a 1964 Buick Riviera painted in vibrant polychrome. Both cars are presented against an expansive geometric design\, evoking the environment of the Southwest and transforming Wilsey Court into a bold\, contemporary expression of Pueblo pottery traditions. Through this use of scale and space\, Simpson forges connections between the ancestral and contemporary\, and forms a new visual vocabulary\, or lexicon\, to assert her cultural heritage and its continuity.

SUMMARY:UCSC Powwow 2026
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally\, the AIRC hosts an annual event called Indigefest during the spring quarter. The annual event celebrates the culture\, songs\, dances\, and arts of Indigenous people in a “pan-tribal” atmosphere of fellowship\, trust\, respect\, and empowerment. This event also celebrates the life of Sophia Garcia Robles\, a Native woman who served UCSC for 27 years in the Financial Aid office. She was actively involved with American Indian communities\, and for this the powwow wishes to demonstrate the community’s deepest appreciation for her support. This year\, the AIRC will reach a larger audience in the greater Santa Cruz and Monterey communities by hosting a pow wow at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in downtown Santa Cruz. Vendors from throughout the State of California will be present with cultural items for sale\, dancers will contest dance for prize money\, and the recipients of the E. A\, Forssgren Scholarship will be recognized for their achievement. The UCSC Pow Wow 2026 will be a unique opportunity for UCSC students and affiliates to engage directly with and celebrate Native American cultures. \nThe event will be open to the public\, supporting the AIRC’s mission of serving as a vital link between UCSC students/staff/faculty/affiliates and the local American Indian community. This project will generate positive visibility for the University as it demonstrates a commitment to the values of the institution – for example\, those outlined in Principles of Community.\nThis project will directly serve the Native American/First Nations/indigenous communities within the city of Santa Cruz and throughout the greater Monterey Bay Area. Specifically\, it will serve Native students\, yet it is inclusive of all identities as pow wows are considered gatherings where individuals of many different backgrounds are welcome. \nDate: 2026-05-17\nLocation: 104 Front St\, Santa Cruz CA\, 95060 (Kaiser Permanente Arena)\nCost: Free\nImage: UCSC-Powwow.png \nEvent Contact Information:\nTelephone:\nWebsite: https://events.ucsc.edu/event/ucsc-powwow-sophia-robles-garcia-memorial-powwow-2026/\nEmail: ariotutar@ucsc.edu

SUMMARY:Kewet: Malki Museum Memorial Weekend
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Annual Fiesta includes honoring Native American veterans\, arts and crafts\, fry bread\, bird songs\, and dances. The Malki Museum sponsors three main events each year which are designed to be traditional and educational.\nFiesta or Kéwet \nMemorial Weekend\, Sunday\, May 24\, 2026\nMalki’s annual Fiesta is a time of gathering together to share culture and traditions. It is also the major fundraising event for the Museum. Each year hundreds of both natives and non-natives come to participate in this unique event which has been an annual celebration since 1966\, when the Kewét (the Cahuilla word for fiesta) tradition was revived after 20 years. \nThe first Fiesta drew a crowd of about 5\,000 people\, with about one-third comprised of natives from all over California. Many local natives have attended since they were children and have grown up watching first-hand as their culture comes alive in the center stage with dancing\, drums\, bird singing\, native arts and crafts\, and the smell of fresh cooked Indian Fry Bread. At the first Fiesta there was a large amount of pit-roasted barbequed beef\, served with other traditional foods such as corn\, beans\, and homemade tortillas\, and these foods are still served every year. \nThe Indian dancers and singers represent several tribes from southern California\, and many of the vendors in the Ramada booths are Native Americans from all over the Southwestern States. The Ramada booths were constructed by volunteers especially for this annual event\, and were made from alder forks\, willow\, arrow weed\, and palm fronds which were hauled out of the local desert canyons. \nThe Fiesta is held each year on the Sunday of Memorial weekend in May. Any vendors interested in displaying their art or merchandise should contact the museum.
