DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special exhibition walk-through of Fire Kinship with Silvia Forni\, Shirley and Ralph Shapiro Director of the Fowler Museum at UCLA. The exhibition focuses on the important kinship ties that connect Indigenous communities to the land\, and on the inextricable connection between ecological knowledge\, spirituality\, and creative expression. \nSilvia Forni joined the Fowler Museum as Shirley and Ralph Shapiro Director in December 2022. At the Fowler she is leading a team of dedicated scholars and museum professionals deeply invested in presenting underrepresented artists and art histories and curating exhibitions and programs with and for the international communities of greater Los Angeles. Before moving to LA\, she served as senior curator of global Africa and deputy vice president of the Department of Art & Culture at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. DESCRIPTION:THREE-TIME U.S. POET LAUREATE JOY HARJO HEADLINES THIS YEAR’S NATIVE AMERICAN ARTS FESTIVAL WEEK AT IDYLLWILD ARTS\, STARTING MONDAY JUNE 16 \nIdyllwild Arts Native American Arts Festival Week takes place at the Idyllwild Arts campus Monday\, June 16 to Friday\, June 20\, 2025. Led by Executive Director Shaliyah Ben (Diné)\, this week-long celebration\, held every summer for more than two decades\, is organized to enhance the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program through a variety of Native American arts-focused activities. These include an invitational exhibition\, tastings of traditional Native cuisine\, the Michael Kabotie Lecture Series\, a curated evening of film\, the Welcoming Home the Birds event\, and a staged reading of the latest play by three-time U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo (Mvskoke) featuring Jazz trumpetist Delbert Anderson (Diné). \nThe week kicks off on Monday\, June 16 with the invitational exhibition Renegades of Art\, curated by Pamela Peters (Diné). The four artists featured will showcase works that convey the strength nd cultural resilience of tribal nations via murals\, mixed media\, and tribal presence. The artist/curator-led panel discussion takes place at 7:00 pm in the Parks Exhibition Center on the Idyllwild Arts campus. A reception with Native foods taste testing to follow at 7:45pm. \nThe return of the popular Michael Kabotie Lecture Series this year will feature famed poet & performer Kinsale Drake (Diné)\, N8ive Beauty cosmetics line creator and host of PBS/FNX series This is Indian Country Ruth Ann Thorn (Luiseño)\, and Yup’ik song and dance with Ossie from Inuit-soul band PAMYUA. This year’s Festival also features a screening of documentary Indian Alley\, written & directed by Pamela Peters (Diné). \nThe week concludes with “Welcoming Home the Birds\,” honoring the relationship the Cahuilla and Serrano have with their traditional homelands. The family-friendly event commences at 5:00 pm with a Native artist marketplace\, hands-on activities for all ages\, and a lineup of Native song and dance. Bird Singing kicks off at 7: 45 pm. DESCRIPTION:Join the museum for the premiere of The School: The Legacy of Hintil Ku’u Ca\, a powerful film created and directed by an all-Native team. This documentary traces the origins of Oakland’s first urban Native child development center\, which began during the All-Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island (1969-1971) and is still in operation today. \nThe afternoon will begin with a traditional drum and dance offering from J.J. Ahboah (Kiowa/Cheyenne) and Teresa Littlebird (Northern Cheyenne)\, followed by the film screening. \nAfterward\, a panel featuring those who attended\, taught\, and shaped The School—Linda Aranaydo (Muscogee Creek/Kialegee Tribal Town/Bear Clan & Filipina)\, Lisa McKay (Pomo/Wailaki/Wintun)\, Kevin Nez (Navajo)\, and language carrier for her Tribe\, Deja Gould (Chochenyo/Confederated Villages of Lisjan)—will engage in a discussion about cultural reawakening and language preservation. The conversation will be moderated by the film’s director and Hintil Ku’u Ca student and teacher\, Mike J. DESCRIPTION:Santa Rosa Junior College Multicultural Museum spotlight on Milton “Bun” Lucas\nMilton “Bun” Lucas (1925-1996)\, a revered elder of Pomo and Miwok descent from the Stewarts Point/Kashia Pomo community\, was a powerful spiritual leader dedicated to keeping his people’s cultural traditions alive. Through Native dance and song\, Bun passed on the rich origin stories of the Pomo and Coast Miwok peoples\, reconnecting generations to their heritage and ancestral roots. \nFrom a young age\, Bun honed his skills as a woodcarver\, starting with his grandfather’s pocket knife. He spent his life creating intricate carvings of animals and human figures\, selling them at local venues like Midgley’s Flea Market in Sebastopol. His work was mentioned in a 1979 Press Democrat article\, showcasing his passion for sharing his culture through art.
