She is the Director of the Ndn Girls Book Club\, a nonprofit organization that promotes Indigenous literature on every level.

This documentary traces the origins of Oakland’s first urban Native child development center\, which began during the All-Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island (1969-1971) and is still in operation today. \nThe afternoon will begin with a traditional drum and dance offering from J.J. Ahboah (Kiowa/Cheyenne) and Teresa Littlebird (Northern Cheyenne)\, followed by the film screening. \nAfterward\, a panel featuring those who attended\, taught\, and shaped The School—Linda Aranaydo (Muscogee Creek/Kialegee Tribal Town/Bear Clan & Filipina)\, Lisa McKay (Pomo/Wailaki/Wintun)\, Kevin Nez (Navajo)\, and language carrier for her Tribe\, Deja Gould (Chochenyo/Confederated Villages of Lisjan)—will engage in a discussion about cultural reawakening and language preservation. The conversation will be moderated by the film’s director and Hintil Ku’u Ca student and teacher\, Mike J. DESCRIPTION:This Earth Day\, Cahuilla artist Gerald Clarke—featured in the Fire Kinship exhibition—will discuss traditional ecological knowledge as the foundation for an Indigenous understanding of the world\, our relationship to fire\, and his artistic practice. \nGerald Clarke is a visual artist\, educator\, tribal leader\, and cultural practitioner whose family has lived in the Anza Valley since time immemorial. An enrolled citizen of the Cahuilla Band of Indians\, Clarke lives in the home built by his grandfather (c. 1940) on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation and oversees the Clarke family cattle ranch. He also is a professor of ethnic studies at the University of California\, Riverside\, where he teaches classes in Native American art\, history\, and culture. As a visual artist\, he has exhibited extensively; and his work can be seen in numerous shows and major museum collections.

Come see Emily Clarke\, from the Cahilla Band of Indians\, for her trunk show t the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum with Febuary 8\, 2025. \nEmily Clarke is an enrolled member of the Cahuilla Band of Indians and a poet\, bead artist\, and traditional Bird Dancer. She is currently serving as the Academy of American Poets Poetry Coalition Fellow for Indigenous Nations Poets. Emily is a 2022 Pushcart Prize nominee and a recipient of the Hayden’s Ferry Review National Inditneous Poets prize. When she is not writing poetry\, Emily creates beaded jewelry and art for her small business\, Cahuilla Woman Creations. While Emily’s poetry navigates her experience as a Native woman in the 21st century\, she sees her beadwork as a personal representation of Indigenous femininity and creativity. In her free time\, Emily enjoys collaborating on communal arts and culture programming with various Native-led organizations and can be found cuddled up with a good book and her three cats.

Her areas of focus are California Indian studies and museum studies/public history. She is passionate about working in institutions and advocating for the return of sacred cultural items to tribal nations to which they belong and telling the true histories of the California Indian people. Oscillating between musical influences\, including the repercussions of ethnomusicology\, and the present/past/future\, the collection rewrites and rerights what it means to be Indigenous\, queer\, and even formerly-emo in the twenty-first century. \nAbout Kinsale Drake\nKinsale Drake (Diné) is a poet\, playwright\, and performer based out of the Southwest. She is a winner of the 2023 National Poetry Series. Her work has appeared in Poetry Magazine\, Poets.org\, Best New Poets\, Black Warrior Review\, Nylon\, MTV\, Teen Vogue\, Time\, and elsewhere. She recently graduated from Yale University\, where she received the J. Edgar Meeker Prize\, the Academy of American Poets College Prize\, the Young Native Playwrights Award\, and the 2022 Joy Harjo Poetry Prize. She was named by Time Magazine as an artist representing her decade “changing how we see the world\,” and is the founder of NDN Girls Book Club (www.ndngirlsbookclub.org).

The show presents a living history and expertise of the Tongva\, Cahuilla\, Luiseño\, and Kumeyaay communities. Contributing artist Leah Mata Fragua will share her art and practice during this studio visit. \nLeah Mata Fragua is an artist\, educator\, and member of the Yak Tityu Tityu Yak Tiłhini (Northern Chumash) tribe located on the Central California Coast. A place-based creator\, Leah embraces a kincentric approach\, which seamlessly blends shared iconography with personal imagery\, highlighting the impact each has on the other. She uses a range of materials\, from found to organic\, traditional to modern\, to explore the interconnectedness of land\, kinships\, and self. Her art reflects how she prioritizes the protection of traditional materials and the continuation of art forms that are important to her community; and demonstrates the intersection between these values and her individual practice.

DESCRIPTION:Join Workshops for Gaza for their second online poetry reading featuring Indigenous poetic geniuses Natalie Diaz\, Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. The reading will be followed by a short moderated discussion. \nNatalie Diaz is Mojave and an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian community. She is the author of the poetry collections Postcolonial Love Poem\, which won the Pulitzer Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Award\, and When My Brother Was an Aztec. She teaches at Arizona State University. \nJamaica Heolimeleikalani is a Kanaka Maoli poet and the author of Remembering our Intimacies: Moʻolelo\, Aloha ʻĀina\, and Ea. She is an associate professor of Indigenous and Native Hawaiian politics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. \nLeanne Betasamosake Simpson is a Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg writer\, musician\, intellectual and member of Alderville First Nation.
