SUMMARY:Basket Weaving Demonstration Day
DESCRIPTION:Let’s take a moment to appreciate Dixie Rogers\, a Karuk basket weaver and cultural practitioner from the Klamath region. Her passion for her art was passed down through generations of her family\, many of whom were accomplished weavers. Dixie works with traditional native plants for her weaving\, and gathers her materials at the ancestral sites where her grandmother and generations of her family gathered basket materials on the Klamath and Salmon Rivers in Northern California. \nShe has given countless workshops and has had her work exhibited throughout the state. On November 16\, she will be demonstrating her weaving acumen from 11 am – 4 pm at the California State Indian Museum at 2618 K Street in Sacramento. Call 916-324-0971 for details.

SUMMARY:Yáamay Anthology Panel
DESCRIPTION:Yáamay is an anthology of Indigenous poetry\, artwork\, and essays specific to what is now known as Southern California. Collectively\, these pieces portray the multifarious effects of colonization on Indigenous people of this area\, from the California Mission system\, to the traumatic assimilationist policies that are still felt today. At the same time\, a focus on ancestral teachings\, the nostalgia of growing up on the rez\, and the joys of (self)love and independence can be found in a way that defies these wounds. Join Yáamay contributors as they speak on their art practices and experiences as Indigenous women. \nPanelists include: Camaray Davalos\, Avelaka Macarro\, Marlene’ Dusek\, and Alexis Munoa Dyer. The panel will be moderated by Juan Reynoso from the Queer Sol Collective. \nThis panel is FREE admission to the public; RSVPs encouraged.

She is a recipient of the The Hallie Ford Fellowship\, the Eiteljorg Contemporary Native Art Fellowship\, the Native Arts and Culture Foundation Fellowship in Visual Art and the Ucross Native Fellowship. \nAll are welcome.\nReception to follow.\nParking and admission is free.

SUMMARY:Marie Mason Potts: The Lettered Life of a California Indian Activist
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Central Library’s West Meeting Room as Sacramento State University professor and anthropologist Terri A. Castaneda discusses her recent book Marie Mason Potts: The Lettered Life of a California Indian Activist (University of Oklahoma Press). Marie Potts (1895-1978) was a Mountain Maidu woman who lived in Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood from the 1940s until her death. It was here that she rose to state and national prominence as the publicity director for the Federated Indians of California and publisher of the longest-running California Indian owned and edited newspaper\, Smoke Signal. Castaneda will demonstrate how Potts’ activist career was shaped by her experiences at two American Indian off-reservation boarding schools\, before taking us on a virtual tour of the many Sacramento venues that were critical to her work with the Federated Indians of California\, from the State Fair to the Capitol. \nDr. Castaneda will have copies of her book for sale before and after the program. This is a free event and facilitated by the Sacramento Room. \nFor more information\, please contact \nJames Scott\n(916) 264-2795\njscott@saclibrary.org
