SUMMARY:2025 San Manuel Pow Wow
DESCRIPTION:San Manuel Pow Wow is a three-day celebration free to the public and features Southern California traditional bird singers and dancers\, as well as North American and Canadian dancers and drum singing groups. In addition\, there is also vending from artisans representing Indian tribal nations from all across North America and Canada. \nSince its beginning in 1996\, the San Manuel Pow Wow has remained a celebration of Indigenous cultures and a symbol or Indigenous resiliency–open to all in the spirit of friendship. \nDuring the three-day event\, the Pow Wow is a sacred space where people from across Indian Country can share their traditions\, spirituality and individual style through sounds\, motion and art. Native American dishes–such as crowd-favorite foods like fry bread–as well as a diverse array of authentic Native American traditional crafts and fine art will be available for purchase from vendors. \nThe San Manuel Pow Wow has grown to be one of the largest in Southern California with more than 20\,000 attendees. It’s free and open to the public. It’s also a reflection of the generosity of the Tribe. As Cruz Chacon did from the start\, San Manuel feeds all dancers and singers over the course of the gathering. Dancers and drum groups pay no entry fees\, and the prize money is generous. Vendors also pay no booth fees. It is a showcase of Indigenous cultures–a symbol of resilience and a builder of understanding between Native and non-Native communities. \nSan Manuel is proud to present more than $250\,000 in cash prizes\, which will be awarded to contestants competing in the Native American dancing and singing competitions. \nThe tribe looks forward to hosting Native American relatives: dancers\, drum groups\, vendors\, spectators\, and honored guests to celebrate the very best of Indian Country. \nFor more information\, contact: powwow@sanmanuel.com \nFor vendor information contact: powwowsanmanuelvendor@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Kewet
DESCRIPTION:Malki’s annual Fiesta is a time of gathering together to share culture and traditions. It is also the major fundraising event for the Museum. Each year hundreds of both natives and non-natives come to participate in this unique event which has been an annual celebration since 1966\, when the Kewét (the Cahuilla word for fiesta) tradition was revived after 20 years. \nThe first Fiesta drew a crowd of about 5\,000 people\, with about one-third comprised of natives from all over California. Many local natives have attended since they were children and have grown up watching first-hand as their culture comes alive in the center stage with dancing\, drums\, bird singing\, native arts and crafts\, and the smell of fresh cooked Indian Fry Bread. At the first Fiesta there was a large amount of pit-roasted barbequed beef\, served with other traditional foods such as corn\, beans\, and homemade tortillas\, and these foods are still served every year. \nThe Indian dancers and singers represent several tribes from southern California\, and many of the vendors in the Ramada booths are Native Americans from all over the Southwestern States. The Ramada booths were constructed by volunteers especially for this annual event\, and were made from alder forks\, willow\, arrow weed\, and palm fronds which were hauled out of the local desert canyons. \nThe Fiesta is held each year on the Sunday of Memorial weekend in May. Any vendors interested in displaying their art or merchandise should contact the museum at www.malkimuseum.org or call 951-849-7289.

SUMMARY:Inlandia Institutes presents - Know We Are Here: Voices of Native California Resistance
DESCRIPTION:FREE • Arts Walk • Thursday\, November 2 • 7–8 PM\, doors open at 6:30\nRiverside Public Library Community Room\n3900 Mission Inn Avenue\, Riverside 92501\nCollecting over twenty-five essays written by more than fifteen California Indian  authors\, Know We Are Here surveys many of the ways California’s Indigenous communities are resisting the legacies of genocide. Focusing on the particular histories\, challenges\, and dynamics of life in Native California—which are often very different from elsewhere in the United States—the book collects essays from writers across the state. It encompasses the perspectives of both elders and the rising generation\, and the contributors include activists\, academics\, students\, memoirists\, and tribal leaders. \nThe collection examines histories of resistance to colonialism in California\, the reclaiming of cultures and languages\, the connection of place and nature to wellness in tribal communities\, efforts to overhaul the racist presentation of California Indians in classrooms and popular culture\, and the meanings of solidarity in Native California. Unifying the book is an introduction by Terria Smith\, editor of the renowned and long-running magazine News from Native California. This book is an indispensable resource for California Indian readers\, educators of all levels in California\, and students in Native studies courses nationally. \nThe library will also provide an array of books by Indigenous authors available for check out. Don’t have a library card? You can get one on the spot! \nFree and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
