Doors open at 2. \nTranslated\, the definition of “skoden” is Native slang “let’s go then” (used frequently on the FX series “Reservation Dogs”) In the context of the festival\, it serves as a powerful call to action  – both for the music\, and as motivation to to get out the Native vote. \nThe family-friendly event is free and open to the public\, and will feature food trucks (and free food – “Indian” tacos made from fry bread for the first 200 attendees)\, as well as Native vendors and information booths\, to help raise awareness and answer questions about the upcoming election and how it impacts Southern California Native communities. SUMMARY:Contemporary Indigenous Voices Short Film Screening & Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join the library for this special event in Honor of Native American Heritage Month. \nThe short film Contemporary Indigenous Voices of California’s South Coast Range is an intimate portrayal of leaders of Indigenous communities\, providing a platform for them to share their stories around connections to land\, climate change\, and rematriation: restoring the relationship between Indigenous people and their ancestral land. Photographer and documentarian Kirti Bassendine will discuss her exhibit and accompanying films. Her work has been featured across California\, including at the de young Museum of Fine Art\, San Francisco and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History\, and been published nationwide. \nKirti Fatania-Bassendine is a photographer born in Kenya who emigrated to England at a young age and her artistic expression was shaped by her experiences growing up within a minority culture. She graduated with BA Honors in Fine Art Photography from Derby University\, England. Over the past four years\, she’s been dedicated to capturing and sharing the stories of Indigenous community chairpersons and members from California’s South Coast Range. \nAll are welcome\, no registration necessary.

DESCRIPTION:Let’s take a moment to appreciate Dixie Rogers\, a Karuk basket weaver and cultural practitioner from the Klamath region. Her passion for her art was passed down through generations of her family\, many of whom were accomplished weavers. Dixie works with traditional native plants for her weaving\, and gathers her materials at the ancestral sites where her grandmother and generations of her family gathered basket materials on the Klamath and Salmon Rivers in Northern California. \nShe has given countless workshops and has had her work exhibited throughout the state. On November 16\, she will be demonstrating her weaving acumen from 11 am – 4 pm at the California State Indian Museum at 2618 K Street in Sacramento. Call 916-324-0971 for details.

DESCRIPTION:Alcatraz Thanksgiving Indigenous People’s Sunrise Gathering\nDate: November 28\, 2024 \nDeparture:  Alcatraz Pier 33 Ferry Terminal \nInsiders Tip: Tickets for this event can sell out. \nEach year on Thanksgiving morning Alcatraz is closed for the day for regular visitors\, but from 4:15 AM till 6:00 AM the ferries run every 15 minutes and bring people to the island to celebrate the Alcatraz Thanksgiving Indigenous People’s Sunrise Gathering.  After the event the ferries run from Pier 33 until the last sailing at 8:45 AM\, when all visitors must leave Alcatraz. \nTickets cost $15 per person and are free for kids under 5. \nThe box office opens at 3:15 AM Thanksgiving morning. You can also buy tickets in person in advance online and at Pier 33. If it does sell out only a very small number of tickets will be available the morning of the ceremony. \nThe event seeks to honor the traditions of the indigenous peoples on the day that attention is normally devoted elsewhere. It’s also sometimes referred to as Unthanksgiving Day or Un-Thanksgiving Day. \nThe event is open to anyone who wants to come.
