SUMMARY:Spotlight Sundays: Screening of The School: The Legacy of Hintil Ku’u Ca and Panel Talk with School Participants and Film Director
DESCRIPTION:Join the museum for the premiere of The School: The Legacy of Hintil Ku’u Ca\, a powerful film created and directed by an all-Native team. This documentary traces the origins of Oakland’s first urban Native child development center\, which began during the All-Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island (1969-1971) and is still in operation today. \nThe afternoon will begin with a traditional drum and dance offering from J.J. Ahboah (Kiowa/Cheyenne) and Teresa Littlebird (Northern Cheyenne)\, followed by the film screening. \nAfterward\, a panel featuring those who attended\, taught\, and shaped The School—Linda Aranaydo (Muscogee Creek/Kialegee Tribal Town/Bear Clan & Filipina)\, Lisa McKay (Pomo/Wailaki/Wintun)\, Kevin Nez (Navajo)\, and language carrier for her Tribe\, Deja Gould (Chochenyo/Confederated Villages of Lisjan)—will engage in a discussion about cultural reawakening and language preservation. The conversation will be moderated by the film’s director and Hintil Ku’u Ca student and teacher\, Mike J. Marin (Navajo/Laguna Pueblo/Washoe). \nThis event is part of our exhibition programming for  Born of the Bear Dance: Dugan Aguilar’s Photographs of Native California—on view through June 2025. Don’t miss it!

SUMMARY:Kewet
DESCRIPTION:Malki’s annual Fiesta is a time of gathering together to share culture and traditions. It is also the major fundraising event for the Museum. Each year hundreds of both natives and non-natives come to participate in this unique event which has been an annual celebration since 1966\, when the Kewét (the Cahuilla word for fiesta) tradition was revived after 20 years. \nThe first Fiesta drew a crowd of about 5\,000 people\, with about one-third comprised of natives from all over California. Many local natives have attended since they were children and have grown up watching first-hand as their culture comes alive in the center stage with dancing\, drums\, bird singing\, native arts and crafts\, and the smell of fresh cooked Indian Fry Bread. At the first Fiesta there was a large amount of pit-roasted barbequed beef\, served with other traditional foods such as corn\, beans\, and homemade tortillas\, and these foods are still served every year. \nThe Indian dancers and singers represent several tribes from southern California\, and many of the vendors in the Ramada booths are Native Americans from all over the Southwestern States. The Ramada booths were constructed by volunteers especially for this annual event\, and were made from alder forks\, willow\, arrow weed\, and palm fronds which were hauled out of the local desert canyons. \nThe Fiesta is held each year on the Sunday of Memorial weekend in May. Any vendors interested in displaying their art or merchandise should contact the museum at www.malkimuseum.org or call 951-849-7289.

SUMMARY:California Native Harm Reduction Summit: Rooted in Tradition\, Rising to Action
DESCRIPTION:The California Native Harm Reduction Summit\, “Rooted in Tradition\, Rising to Action\,” brings together Tribal and urban Native community members\, people with lived and living experience of drug use\, health professionals\, government representatives\, and local leaders to address the ongoing challenges around substance use and stigma. This gathering fosters meaningful discussions on how harm reduction strategies can break down barriers to care\, expand access to integrated treatment\, and strengthen community connections through equity-driven education and culturally responsive practices. \nAcross California Indian Country\, it’s important for communities to come together and strengthen our relationships. The organization sees a harm reductionist\, intersectional health approach as a way for communities to collectively rise to action. They hope for this summit to be a site of fostering connections with one another\, sharing knowledge and experience\, and building a thriving network together. \nJoin the organization in Monterey\, California from June 23 through June 25\, 2025 for this multi-day convening. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/california-native-harm-reduction-summit-tickets-1302244120219?aff=oddtdtcreator
