The demonstrations often include Cahuilla bird singing\, basket weaving\, acorn leaching and grinding\, pottery making\, and flint-knapping.

DESCRIPTION:The SoCal Tribal Food Sovereignty Gathering at Coastal Roots Farm is an opportunity for Tribal members in Southern California that are actively cultivating or interested in joining the food sovereignty movement among Indigenous Nations. Examples of people active in food sovereignty work include Tribal farmers\, seed keepers\, land stewards\, hunters\, livestock owners\, foragers\, botanists\, fishers\, medicine makers\, and cooks. \nThe Gathering will include learning sessions\, networking between Tribal community members\, and shared meals provided by the Farm. This event is intended for Tribal community members and those working directly with Tribal communities. \nSunday\, October 21st from 9:30am – 3pm \nParticipants are encouraged to carpool and transportation scholarships are available upon request! To request transportation support to/from the Gathering at Coastal Roots Farm\, please note the request in the “additional information” section of the registration form or email megan@coastalrootsfarm.org

There will be activities sharing traditional and contemporary Indigenous perspectives and narratives. \nThis event complements the launch of the Digital Florentine Codex. \nGenerous support provided by the Getty Patron Program. \nALL DAY ACTIVITIES \nTaste Traditional Mesoamerican Flavors\nEnjoy a tasting menu selected by culinary anthropologist Claudia Serrato featuring cacao\, chia seeds\, maíz\, and amaranth\, and take a recipe card to try at home! \nBlock Stamp Workshop Led by Meztli Projects\nLearn about Mexica lifeways using linocut stamps and create your own Codex inspired by the Florentine Codex. \nNative California Plants\nNavigate the Getty Center gardens using a plant guide illustrated by Weshoyot Alvitre and learn about preserving and protecting white sage (Latin: Salvia apiana; Tongva: Kasili). \nMusical Performances\nCarmina Escobar\, Micaela Tobin and Jacqueline Wilson perform artist Raven Chacon’s score For Zitkála Šá (2017–2020)\, written for and dedicated to Indigenous female composers and musicians. Each score visualizes the individual dedicatee’s style of music\, sounds\, and instruments. Performances will occur throughout the afternoon.
