SUMMARY:Autry After Hours | Future Imaginaries: Indigenous Fashion
DESCRIPTION:Join the museum for a fashion-focused tour of their latest exhibition Future Imaginaries: Indigenous Art\, Fashion\, Technology  by curator Amy Scott. \nSchedule: \n5:30 p.m. | Food and Beverages Available for Purchase \n6 p.m. | Museum Galleries Open \n7 p.m. | Fashion Tour by Amy Scott \n9 p.m. | Museum Closes \n  \nAbout the Tour: \nIndigenous peoples have been adorning themselves with custom clothing and regalia for centuries in ways that broadcast cultural identity\, aesthetics\, and continuity with ancestral traditions\, in which materials\, patterns\, colors\, and forms are carefully chosen for their visual\, spiritual\, and kinetic properties. Many of the works in the exhibition combine historical materials with newer ones including silk\, organza\, embroidery\, tulle\, and titanium. Some also feature recycled or found materials such as industrial laminate\, computer components\, mylar\, and geodes that speak to their relationship to their environment. \nWhen worn by Indigenous people and of Indigenous design\, these clothes speak to the ongoing significance and resilience of certain aesthetic and cultural traditions while carrying Indigenous knowledge forward\, from the high fashion runways of today into outer space and beyond\, or wherever the future might take us. \n  \n\nAutry After Hours: \n\nFuture Imaginaries: Indigenous Art\, Fashion\, Technology is among more than 70 exhibitions and programs presented as part of PST ART. Returning in September 2024 with its latest edition\, PST ART: Art & Science Collide\, this landmark regional event explores the intersections of art and science\, both past and present. PST ART is presented by Getty. For more information about PST ART: Art & Science Collide\, please visit: pst.art \nAdditional support for Future Imaginaries is provided by the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation\, the Ethnic Arts Council\, The Henry Luce Foundation\, The Mildred E. and Harvey S. SUMMARY:New Exhibition: Brian Duane Tripp (1945-2022)
DESCRIPTION:Join the museum for a journey into the vibrant world of Brian Duane Tripp (1945-2022)\, a celebrated member of the Karuk Tribe whose artistic prowess and cultural contributions have left an indelible mark on history. Including the mural on the Clarke’s building in Opera Alley\, “ The Sun Set Twice On The People That Day.” \nBorn and raised in the heart of Klamath\, CA\, Brian’s journey began amidst the rich tapestry of Karuk culture. His artistic talents shone brightly from a young age\, earning him accolades such as “Most Talented” during his high school years. Yet his path would soon take a profound turn when he answered the call to serve in the Vietnam War\, an experience that deeply influenced his artistic vision upon his return. \nAt Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt)\, Brian immersed himself in the study of art\, eventually becoming a pioneer in Native American Art History. His creations\, spanning from the 1980s to the early 2000s\, are hailed as the zenith of his creativity\, blending traditional Karuk themes with poignant commentary on the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. His artworks\, often using newspapers as canvas to amplify political statements\, have graced prestigious institutions from the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento to the New Museum in New York City. \nThe Clarke Historical Museum invites you to delve into Brian Tripp’s world. Explore how his art reflects his remarkable talent and his deep-rooted commitment to preserving Karuk heritage and advocating for Indigenous rights. Discover pieces that speak volumes about resilience\, identity\, and the enduring spirit of cultural revitalization.

SUMMARY:Continuity: Cahuilla Basket Weavers and their Legacies
DESCRIPTION:More than 140 Cahuilla baskets are housed at the Benton Museum of Art\, and though they are aesthetically beautiful—which is part of what makes them art—they are not merely museum “specimens.” Rather\, they represent the continuous relationships that Cahuilla people have with their traditions\, ancestral knowledge\, lands\, and one another. \nMany of the Cahuilla baskets housed at the museum were collected in the Coachella Valley in the 1920s by a Pomona College graduate named Emil Steffa (class of 1899) and are foundational items in the college’s collection. Steffa was unusual among his contemporaries because he recorded the names of some of the basket makers he collected from. As a result\, we know who the makers were and can reconnect their work to their living descendants. \nContinuty presents a selection of Cahuilla baskets housed at the Benton along with their histories and long standing relationships with their relatives. This exhibition tells a story of the importance of reunifying Native collection items with living descendants\, while also acknowledging the institutional histories that have impacted local Native American communities. \nThe ancestral items at the Benton want to be touched\, held\, sung to\, loved\, and prayed with. Through their patterns and forms they manifest ancestral teachings and resilience. This exhibition at the Benton recognizes that it is important to showcase not only the aesthetic beauty of Cahuilla baskets but also their continued relationship to tribal members. The Benton and the curator are currently collaborating with Cahuilla tribal members\, the Nex’wetem Basketry group\, and Native community members from the surrounding area to enrich the stories of these baskets. We invite you to engage with us.

SUMMARY:Mercedes Dorame: Where Sky Touches Water
DESCRIPTION:Mercedes Dorame’s exhibition\, “Where Sky Touches Water” brings together a collection of new and recent work\, combining photography and sculpture to explore the profound beauty of our natural world.\nDorame’s lens captures the vibrant tapestry of our Native ecology and its elusive peripheries\, inviting reflection on the delicate balance between the familiar and what lies beyond. \nInspired by her field research on the Channel Islands\, focusing on Pimugna (Catalina Island) and Limuw (Santa Cruz Island)\, the exhibition’s images and sculptural works consider the liminal spaces of our ecological environment as gateways and portals to consider alternate realms—unseen cultural histories\, dimensions beyond our consciousness\, concealed habitats. In this instance\, darkness as a contemplative space evokes the ceremonial\, guiding us through an expanse where the earthly and celestial intersect. \nThe exhibitions sculptural works serve as anchors\, embodying physical inversions and thresholds into the unknown\, while allowing for movement between realms.\nDorame invites us to find tranquility in these spaces that may not be easily understood; embracing the subtle borders beyond the familiar—where sky touches water. \nFor more information and related programming go to https://oxyarts.oxy.edu/exhibitions/mercedes-dorame-where-sky-touches-water

SUMMARY:The Iridescence of Knowing
DESCRIPTION:The Iridescence of Knowing invites visitors to explore the rich lineage of Indigenous cultural production in Tovaangar\, known today as the greater Los Angeles basin. The exhibition brings together a collection of works from diverse artists from multiple generations and varied First Peoples communities of Southern California. The works challenge conventional boundaries between “craft” and “fine art”\, uplifting intergenerational transmission of culture\, the significance of lineage\, and the profound connections between cultural tradition and contemporary artistic practices. \nIn Indigenous cultures\, ancestral histories are often influenced by multifaceted perspectives—ecological\, spiritual\, oral\, cosmological. The notion of iridescence captures this fluid\, reflective\, ever-evolving nature of understanding and serves as a powerful metaphor for the transformative and dynamic qualities of knowing. \nWeaving\, both as a physical technique vital to Indigenous craft and as a symbolic concept\, lies at the heart of this exhibition. Weaving represents not only tangible embodied skill\, but also the intangible essence of transgenerational cultural memory that bridges time and space. Here\, weaving serves as a powerful symbol\, holding space for different modalities of artistic expression and fostering a circular expansion of ideas that move beyond traditional linear narratives of time. In this way\, contemporary approaches to making are woven inextricably with generational ones\, holding refractions of influence and celebrating the vibrant presence of both the past and present in the current creative landscape. \nThe Iridescence of Knowing provides a space for reflection\, dialogue\, and celebration of artistic traditions. It invites visitors to consider the embodied relationship between physical objects and the realms of generational energy that they hold. It encourages exploration of ancestral lineages and contemplation of ways in which cultural traditions can be sustained\, evolve\, and remain relevant in the present and for generations to come. \nExhibiting artists include: Weshoyot Alvitre\, Theresa Ambo\, Jessa Calderon\, Gerald Clarke\, Lewis deSoto\, Robert Dorame\, Katie Dorame\, River Garza\, Sky Hopinka\, Adrienne Kinsella\, L.Frank Manriquez\, Leah Mata Fragua\, Samantha Morales-Johnson\, Cara Romero\, and Craig Torres \nThis exhibition is curated by Joel Garcia\, Fall 2023 Curator-in-Residence\, and Mercedes Dorame\, 2023-24 Wanlass Artist-in-Residence. \nhttps://oxyarts.oxy.edu/exhibitions/iridescence-knowing \nGallery Hours: Monday through Saturday 11 AM – 4 PM \n  \nOpening reception on September 14\, 2023 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available!

SUMMARY:Sherman Indian School: 100+ Years of Education and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:By the late nineteenth century\, the federal government’s efforts to fully assimilate Native Americans had proved unsuccessful. Growing concerns over the welfare of Native communities led to the establishment of twenty-five federal off-reservation boarding schools for Native American children\, where students could be formally educated and “civilized” through a strict program of academics\, vocational training\, and Christian teachings\, far away from their families and tribal communities.
