SUMMARY:Crossing Waters: Contemporary Tongva Artists Carrying Pimugna
DESCRIPTION:In this inaugural partnership between the Catalina Museum for Art & History and the Tongva Community\, Crossing Waters highlights the works of three contemporary Tongva artists\, Weshoyot Alvitre\, Mercedes Dorame\, and River Garza. \nPimugna\, often shortened to Pimu\, is the Tongva name for the island now commonly known as Catalina Island. It was once an integral part of greater Tonvaangar—the Tongva world. Through their individual practices\, these artists explore their relationship with the island\, crossing waters to connect past\, present\, and future. \nFor more information\, please visit https://www.catalinamuseum.org/

SUMMARY:Voices from the Rez
DESCRIPTION:The La Jolla Historical Society is honored to present an exhibit of contemporary art created by Native Americans from the reservations of Southern California where San Diego County is home to eighteen reservations – more than any other county in the United States. Southern California Natives live both on and off the Rez\, upholding historic culture and traditions while concurrently inhabiting the modern world. In this exhibition\, ten artists reveal images\, ingenuity\, and unrestrained voices divulging their stories and communicating opinions through artistic expression. The medium for powerfully affirming their voices is through painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, fashion\, beadwork\, mixed media\, narrative writing\, song and performance. Works from these artists break through stereotypical barriers and open a path to share their strength\, perspectives\, and influential experience. \nFeatured artists: Chuck Contreras\, Gail Werner\, Gerald Clarke\, Gordon Johnson\, James Luna\, Jamie Okuma\, Johnny “Bear” Contreras\, Robert Freeman\, Sandra Okuma and Tracy Lee Nelson (Mataweer). \nCurated by Dana Hicks\, PhD \nFunding for this project generously provided by Patsy and David Marino; an anonymous donor; and the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians. Institutional support provided by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and by the Members of the La Jolla Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Our Existence is Our Resistance
DESCRIPTION:“Our Existence is Our Resistance is a collection of paintings by Dr. Eric Tippeconnic\, an enrolled member of the Comanche nation and Assistant Professor in American Indian Studies here at California State University San Marcos (housed on the traditional homelands of the Luiseño/Payómkawichum peoples). The exhibition tells the story of resiliency and pride in multi-layered Native American cultures that are deeply rooted in honor and tradition\, but it also challenges the clichés of conventional understandings and representations to show contemporary and evolving Indigenous communities. This visual land acknowledgement emphasizes the living\, contemporary and dynamic culture and traditions of the communities that have belonged to this land since time immemorial.” \nCSUSM Special Collections – CSUSM University Library – California State University San Marcos \nFor more information\, visit https://biblio.csusm.edu/context-library-series/tippeconnic/

SUMMARY:Jules Tavernier and the Elem Pomo
DESCRIPTION:Jules Tavernier and the Elem Pomo brings together more than seventy-five works to tell the story of Jules Tavernier (1844–1889) and his extraordinary career and encounters with Native peoples\, with a focus on his rediscovered masterwork Dance in a Subterranean Roundhouse at Clear Lake\, California (1878). The painting now returns to California for the first time in over 140 years as part of an exploration of the artist’s work through a multiplicity of voices and perspectives\, including those of Pomo cultural leaders and curators\, offering a new interpretation of Tavernier’s body of work. Pieces by Tavernier\, as well as representations of the Pomo by his contemporaries\, are presented alongside more than fifty examples of fine historic and contemporary Pomo basketry and regalia. These objects celebrate the enduring artistry and resiliency of the Pomo artists and cultural bearers and highlight their continued cultural presence in their homelands today. \n  \nhttps://deyoung.famsf.org/exhibitions/jules-tavernier?utm_medium=email&utm_source=famsfspevents&utm_campaign=education&utm_content=2021-11-19—inline1&mc_cid=85bd501626&mc_eid=875e87f285

SUMMARY:When I Remember I See Red: American Indian Art and Activism in California
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition (*from The Autry website)\nBeginning with the occupation of Alcatraz in 1969\, California  became a beacon of creative freedom\, individual expression\, and  social activism for Native peoples across the country. The region quickly transformed into a place where Native artists engaged with cultural diversity\, historical traditions\, and contemporary art to critique its colonial past. As a result\, California became a site of  artistic achievement within the broader story of Native art. \nThis exhibition features Native California artists who have used their work as a means of cultural resistance and renewal. Many have helped—and continue to help—restore aspects of ceremony\, dance\, language\, and material culture once in danger of disappearing.  Several facilitate workshops\, teaching the next generation\, and curate exhibitions consisting of work by their peers. Some of the pieces displayed are explicitly political in content\, but in general  aim more to reverse erasure and invisibility while reasserting Native values and sovereignty. Collectively\, the artists in this exhibition practice a version of activism that combines elements of traditional and contemporary society to call out racial and social injustice and  to heal communities through cultural renewal. \nWhen I Remember I See Red was conceived by\, and is dedicated to\, Nomtipom Wintu artist Frank LaPena (1936–2019)\, a renowned art writer\, curator\, poet\, traditionalist\, and professor at Sacramento State University for 40 years.

SUMMARY:Sovereignty Expanded: Indigenous Geographies of the Contemporary American West
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Hans Baumann’s exhibition Hans Baumannn: 5 Distillations (Salton Sea)\, Pitzer College Art Galleries is hosting a symposium “Sovereignty Expanded: Indigenous Geographies of the Contemporary American West\,” on Friday\, February 28 and Saturday\, February 29 in Benson Auditorium at Pitzer College. \nIn 2017\, Hans Baumann initiated a long-term artistic collaboration with the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians to measure the disappearance of the Salton Sea from their sovereign tribal lands in the Coachella Valley. Although it is the largest body of water in California\, the Salton Sea scarcely registers in the public consciousness and\, when it does\, it is as a miasmatic blight. By 2030\, one-third of the Sea will have disappeared\, leaving behind vast expanses of dusty playa contaminated by agricultural runoff and industrial effluents. These low-lying desert lands have been the homeland of the Cahuilla since time immemorial\, and the future of the tribal community is inextricably linked to the future of this landscape. This collaboration is an attempt to reflect upon the complex socio-ecological dynamics responsible for the Sea’s existence and to engage with—but not intervene upon—the entropic processes of the Sea’s decline.
