A few partners include: News from Native California\, Native American Land Conservancy\, Mother Earth Clan\, Malki Museum\, California Indian Nations College\, Cahuilla Consortium and others! Hands-on activities will be available for all ages to learn and enjoy\, and a lineup of Native song and dance performances will take place from 5:00pm to 7:30pm. At 7:45pm we will kick off with Bird Singing\, welcoming groups throughout Southern California and beyond to share and dance Bird!

DESCRIPTION:This headlining event of the 2025 Native American Arts Festival Week is an intimate staged reading of Joy Harjo’s latest play\, “We Were There When Jazz Was Invented\,” with the musical accompaniment of Diné Trumpeter\, Delbert Anderson. This is the very first time the two renowned Jazz Musicians will hit the stage together. \nJoy Harjo is an internationally renowned performer and writer of the Muscogee Nation. She served three terms as the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States from 2019-2022 and is winner of the Poetry Society of America’s 2024 Frost Medal\, Yale’s 2023 Bollingen Prize for American Poetry\, and was recently honored with a National Humanities Medal. \nDelbert Anderson\, a Diné jazz trumpet artist\, composer\, and educator\, stands at the forefront of a vibrant Native American jazz scene. His work\, deeply rooted in his Diné heritage\, seamlessly integrates Navajo “spinning songs” of love\, healing\, and courtship with jazz and funk\, thus marking him as a community-minded Indigenous individualist.

Led by Executive Director Shaliyah Ben (Diné)\, this week-long celebration\, held every summer for more than two decades\, is organized to enhance the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program through a variety of Native American arts-focused activities. These include an invitational exhibition\, tastings of traditional Native cuisine\, the Michael Kabotie Lecture Series\, a curated evening of film\, the Welcoming Home the Birds event\, and a staged reading of the latest play by three-time U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo (Mvskoke) featuring Jazz trumpetist Delbert Anderson (Diné). \nThe week kicks off on Monday\, June 16 with the invitational exhibition Renegades of Art\, curated by Pamela Peters (Diné). The four artists featured will showcase works that convey the strength nd cultural resilience of tribal nations via murals\, mixed media\, and tribal presence. The artist/curator-led panel discussion takes place at 7:00 pm in the Parks Exhibition Center on the Idyllwild Arts campus. A reception with Native foods taste testing to follow at 7:45pm. \nThe return of the popular Michael Kabotie Lecture Series this year will feature famed poet & performer Kinsale Drake (Diné)\, N8ive Beauty cosmetics line creator and host of PBS/FNX series This is Indian Country Ruth Ann Thorn (Luiseño)\, and Yup’ik song and dance with Ossie from Inuit-soul band PAMYUA. This year’s Festival also features a screening of documentary Indian Alley\, written & directed by Pamela Peters (Diné). \nThe week concludes with “Welcoming Home the Birds\,” honoring the relationship the Cahuilla and Serrano have with their traditional homelands. Salmon have been hatching in the waters of the McCloud River above the shasta dam for three years now under the careful watch of Winnemem Cultural Resource Fisheries Specialists. These salmon have been released into the Sacramento River below the dam with expectation of returning to spawn. This years Run4salmon prayer will be focused on praying for a healthy return to the Winnemem Waywaket. The journey will take place in late May thru early June.

DESCRIPTION:Fri\, April 4\, 2025\, 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm\nThe Storyteller’s Hands: Carvings and Teachings of Bun Lucas – Exhibit Reception\nMilton “Bun” Lucas (1925-1996)\, a revered elder of Pomo and Miwok descent from the Stewarts Point/Kashia Pomo community\, was a powerful spiritual leader dedicated to keeping his people’s cultural traditions alive. Through Native dance and song\, Bun passed on the rich origin stories of the Pomo and Coast Miwok peoples\, reconnecting generations to their heritage and ancestral roots. \nFrom a young age\, Bun honed his skills as a woodcarver\, starting with his grandfather’s pocket knife. He spent his life creating intricate carvings of animals and human figures\, selling them at local venues like Midgley’s Flea Market in Sebastopol. His work was mentioned in a 1979 Press Democrat article\, showcasing his passion for sharing his culture through art. \nJoin the SRJC Multicultural Museum and the Native American Center for a special opening reception. Enjoy an afternoon of food\, community\, and reflection with open houses at three locations on the Santa Rosa Junior College Campus: The Multicultural Museum\, the Native American Center\, and the Student Activities Center. \nA speaking program featuring friends and family of Bun Lucas will take place from 4:00 – 4:30 pm at the Student Activities Center. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with wayfinding.
