SUMMARY:Intrinsic: Belonging to the Land - Artist's Talk & Reception
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit Intrinsic: Belonging to the Land serves as a celebration of Native resistance and cultural resilience. The showcased artists provide a glimpse into the vast tapestry of Native America. They were selected for their ability to bridge cultural traditions with contemporary innovation\, reflecting an unbroken connection to their cultural heritage while embracing bold\, contemporary forms. This movement is not a linear departure from history; rather\, it is a cyclical journey that maintains continuous ties with Native roots. Intrinsic: Belonging to the Land embodies this enduring spirit. \nArtistis: Dr. Eric Tippeconnic (Comanche Nation)\, Monica Zavala (Tongva & Acjachemen)\, Lanise Luna (Pala Band of Mission Indians & Mescalero Apache)\, Kawish Trujillo (Kuupangaxwichem & Aha Makav)\, and Dr. Rodney Haring (Seneca Nation) \nExhibit Open: October 11th – November 24th 2024 \nArtist’s Talk & Reception: Saturday November 2nd\, 1-3 pm.

SUMMARY:California Native Vote Project’s Skoden Indigenous Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:A Day of Great Music and Great Reasons to Vote \nMonterey Park\, CA – October 21\, 2024 \nThe California Native Vote Project (CNVP) is sponsoring the first of what it hopes will be an annual event\, the Skoden Indigenous Music Festival October 26 from 3 – 8 pm October 26 at Barnes Park Amphitheater in Monterey Park. Doors open at 2. \nTranslated\, the definition of “skoden” is Native slang “let’s go then” (used frequently on the FX series “Reservation Dogs”) In the context of the festival\, it serves as a powerful call to action  – both for the music\, and as motivation to to get out the Native vote. \nThe family-friendly event is free and open to the public\, and will feature food trucks (and free food – “Indian” tacos made from fry bread for the first 200 attendees)\, as well as Native vendors and information booths\, to help raise awareness and answer questions about the upcoming election and how it impacts Southern California Native communities. A ballot drop box is on site at Barnes Park. \n“Not everybody goes to a pow wow\, not everybody goes to a cultural event\,” says festival organizer Rene Williams\, CNVP’s Director of Strategic Initiatives. “Being able to connect with more community members in different ways is really important and it’s also great to celebrate our community in a different way. Bring a blanket and a ballot.”. \nComedian Krazy Kasey AKA Rezzalicious AKA Kasey Nicholson (A’aa’nii’nin\, White Clay Nation) will emcee the event features an eclectic lineup of Native artists\, from blues and rock guitarists to poetry and hip hop to soulful singer-songwriters and alternative rock. \nPerformers include: \n• Levi Platero Band (Navajo Nation)\n• Bobby Sanchez (Peruvian)\n• Sage Bond (Diné/Apache)\n• Stella Standingbear (Lakota)\n• Yelawolf (Cherokee)\n• One Way Sky

SUMMARY:Yáamay Anthology Panel
DESCRIPTION:Yáamay is an anthology of Indigenous poetry\, artwork\, and essays specific to what is now known as Southern California. Collectively\, these pieces portray the multifarious effects of colonization on Indigenous people of this area\, from the California Mission system\, to the traumatic assimilationist policies that are still felt today. At the same time\, a focus on ancestral teachings\, the nostalgia of growing up on the rez\, and the joys of (self)love and independence can be found in a way that defies these wounds. Join Yáamay contributors as they speak on their art practices and experiences as Indigenous women. \nPanelists include: Camaray Davalos\, Avelaka Macarro\, Marlene’ Dusek\, and Alexis Munoa Dyer. The panel will be moderated by Juan Reynoso from the Queer Sol Collective. \nThis panel is FREE admission to the public; RSVPs encouraged.
