SUMMARY:Shuuluk Wechuwvi – Where Lightning Was Born
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous play Shuuluk Wechuwvi: Premiers August 23 in San Diego!\nRooted in elder wisdom\, creation story\, and cultural continuity\, Shuuluk Wechuwvi – Where Lightning Was Born\, presented by the Eyaay Ahuun Foundation\, emerges as a radiant act of resistance and remembrance. This project—part of the KNAPP-Tijuana and Otay River Valley revitalization effort—confronts the decades-long degradation of a region strained by environmental injustice\, economic disinvestment\, and fractured planning. The area continues to suffer from rampant pollution and an unresolved sewage crisis—a crisis exacerbated by cross-border eco-mismanagement and inadequate infrastructure. Despite ongoing negotiations\, binational planning often offers patchwork remedies to what is\, at its core\, a profound public health and ecological emergency. Shuuluk Wechuwvi responds to this crisis not with despair\, but with story. Through the mediums of live performance and visual narrative\, this play and comic seek to illuminate pathways toward collective healing and ecological repair. It is a love letter to the land and the people who refuse to let it be forgotten—calling forth a shared vision that is grounded in culture\, responsive to community\, and brave enough to demand more than short-term solutions. This is not just art—it is a call to action\, a reclamation of narrative\, and a step toward a truly binational\, community-rooted future.

SUMMARY:ívaqîú·í by Subversive Verses
DESCRIPTION:Subversive Verses is stoked to bring you the second gathering in our live poetry reading series. If you haven’t heard of them yet\, they are a collective of California Native women centering the dynamic voices of our community and celebrating the strength of Indigenous emotion through art\, music\, and poetry. \nFor the summer season\, the group will bring you ívaqîú·í. In the Cahuilla language\, ívaqîú·í translates to “becoming strong.” And with everything that the world has been through in these recent months – seeing attacks on collective rights as human beings as well as against collective lands – everyone has had to draw on our strength as Indigenous Peoples. The group invites you to join them as they share\, grow\, and heal together in their traditional summer homelands of Idyllwild. \nLook for updates on insta @subversive_verses \nAudiowild Studios\, 54240 Ridgeview Dr\, Idyllwild-Pine Cove\, CA 92549

SUMMARY:We’éqlapish: Live Poetry of Indigenous Women
DESCRIPTION:Subversive Verses\, a collective of California Native women centering the dynamic voices of our community and celebrating the strength of Indigenous emotion through art\, music\, and poetry. \nRSVP at https://tinyurl.com/m2y25ahk \nIn Payómkawichum\, We’éqlapish is a complex word\, but roughly translates to an act of disputing/disagreeing with something. When using it\, you’re letting it be known you don’t agree with someone’s words or actions against you. It’s pretty open-ended\, and can be applied to so many instances: A government that wants to eradicate us\, an ex who doesn’t respect us\, etc. It’s relevant to the energy we are bringing to this event\, actively using our words/poetry to stand up for ourselves. In short; We aren’t gonna go down that easy.)

DESCRIPTION:Join the museum for an exhilarating afternoon of staged readings featuring these groundbreaking new plays\, where talented playwrights will compete for the $500 Thomas Studie Gadugi Audience Prize and the $1000 Von Marie Atchley Excellence in Playwriting Award. \nFor far too long\, when most people thought of Native Americans\, they often conjured up outdated images of exotic figures from history\, adorned in leather and feathers\, trapped behind museum glass. Few see a beautifully vibrant culture that thrives today. \nFor their 15th Annual Short Play Festival\, they asked Native playwrights to boldly go where few have imagined Native people before: the future! What captivating tales have they woven? Witness a future filled with hope\, the delightfully absurd\, and the downright terrifying.

SUMMARY:Antíkoni by Beth Piatote
DESCRIPTION:Opening: November 8\, 8 p.m.\nThursdays and Fridays: 8 p.m.\nSaturdays and Sundays: 2 p.m.\nStudent Matinees: November 15 and 22\, 11 a.m. \nFor the museums’s 30th anniversary season Native Voices is producing the World Premiere of Beth Piatote’s Antíkoni at the historic Southwest Campus of the Autry\, formerly known as the Southwest Museum of the American Indian. Staged in a space that once housed thousands of Native ancestral remains and cultural materials\, Antíkoni makes us question what role museums have in caring for the dead. \nIn this timely retelling of a Greek classic\, a Nez Perce family is caught between the pressures of the outside world—where a Nationalist Party threatens to silence their history. Set in the near future\, Antíkoni must defend eternal truths\, Kreon rides the waves of changing politics\, and a Chorus of Aunties delivers raucous and wise traditional stories to guide them. \nJoin in the reclaiming of both a physical structure\, one that encased Native art and ancestors while dismissing humanity\, and a literary structure deemed the epitome of western theatre which blatantly disregards one of the world’s oldest forms of storytelling.

SUMMARY:Mali Obomsawin: Sweet Tooth
DESCRIPTION:Bassist\, singer\, and bandleader Mali Obomsawin performs music from their debut album Sweet Tooth\, a project that shines a light on the Indigenous history of jazz and expresses the vitality and contemporary nature of Indigenous culture. \nAn Abenaki from Odanak First Nation\, Obomsawin studied with the renowned cornetist and composer Taylor Ho Bynam at Dartmouth\, an institution originally founded in the 18th century to educate the Wabanaki people\, and they discovered the archived and unheard field recordings of their Odanak ancestors in storage – recordings that have been integrated into Sweet Tooth. \n\n\nThe Out of Your Head Records release is based around the concepts of adaptation and innovation in modernity\, a project both personal and universal to the stories of the Indiginous populations of the U.S. and Canada. This is a contemporary music\, and is not an expression of the bridging of worlds\, but shows how jazz and Indiginous culture is inextricably linked from the time that colonizers and militaries brought brass band instruments to Native lands. \nThrough their artistry\, Mali Obomsawin lifts their ancestral history of resistance and adaptation\, and carries on a proud tradition of Native jazz artists including Don Cherry\, Mildred Bailey\, Oscar Pettiford\, and many others.

SUMMARY:California Native Vote Project’s Skoden Indigenous Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:A Day of Great Music and Great Reasons to Vote \nMonterey Park\, CA – October 21\, 2024 \nThe California Native Vote Project (CNVP) is sponsoring the first of what it hopes will be an annual event\, the Skoden Indigenous Music Festival October 26 from 3 – 8 pm October 26 at Barnes Park Amphitheater in Monterey Park. Doors open at 2. \nTranslated\, the definition of “skoden” is Native slang “let’s go then” (used frequently on the FX series “Reservation Dogs”) In the context of the festival\, it serves as a powerful call to action  – both for the music\, and as motivation to to get out the Native vote. \nThe family-friendly event is free and open to the public\, and will feature food trucks (and free food – “Indian” tacos made from fry bread for the first 200 attendees)\, as well as Native vendors and information booths\, to help raise awareness and answer questions about the upcoming election and how it impacts Southern California Native communities. A ballot drop box is on site at Barnes Park. \n“Not everybody goes to a pow wow\, not everybody goes to a cultural event\,” says festival organizer Rene Williams\, CNVP’s Director of Strategic Initiatives. “Being able to connect with more community members in different ways is really important and it’s also great to celebrate our community in a different way. Bring a blanket and a ballot.”. \nComedian Krazy Kasey AKA Rezzalicious AKA Kasey Nicholson (A’aa’nii’nin\, White Clay Nation) will emcee the event features an eclectic lineup of Native artists\, from blues and rock guitarists to poetry and hip hop to soulful singer-songwriters and alternative rock. \nPerformers include: \n• Levi Platero Band (Navajo Nation)\n• Bobby Sanchez (Peruvian)\n• Sage Bond (Diné/Apache)\n• Stella Standingbear (Lakota)\n• Yelawolf (Cherokee)\n• One Way Sky
