SUMMARY:UCSC Powwow 2026
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally\, the AIRC hosts an annual event called Indigefest during the spring quarter. The annual event celebrates the culture\, songs\, dances\, and arts of Indigenous people in a “pan-tribal” atmosphere of fellowship\, trust\, respect\, and empowerment. This event also celebrates the life of Sophia Garcia Robles\, a Native woman who served UCSC for 27 years in the Financial Aid office. She was actively involved with American Indian communities\, and for this the powwow wishes to demonstrate the community’s deepest appreciation for her support. This year\, the AIRC will reach a larger audience in the greater Santa Cruz and Monterey communities by hosting a pow wow at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in downtown Santa Cruz. Vendors from throughout the State of California will be present with cultural items for sale\, dancers will contest dance for prize money\, and the recipients of the E. A\, Forssgren Scholarship will be recognized for their achievement. The UCSC Pow Wow 2026 will be a unique opportunity for UCSC students and affiliates to engage directly with and celebrate Native American cultures. \nThe event will be open to the public\, supporting the AIRC’s mission of serving as a vital link between UCSC students/staff/faculty/affiliates and the local American Indian community. This project will generate positive visibility for the University as it demonstrates a commitment to the values of the institution – for example\, those outlined in Principles of Community.\nThis project will directly serve the Native American/First Nations/indigenous communities within the city of Santa Cruz and throughout the greater Monterey Bay Area. Specifically\, it will serve Native students\, yet it is inclusive of all identities as pow wows are considered gatherings where individuals of many different backgrounds are welcome. \nDate: 2026-05-17\nLocation: 104 Front St\, Santa Cruz CA\, 95060 (Kaiser Permanente Arena)\nCost: Free\nImage: UCSC-Powwow.png \nEvent Contact Information:\nTelephone:\nWebsite: https://events.ucsc.edu/event/ucsc-powwow-sophia-robles-garcia-memorial-powwow-2026/\nEmail: ariotutar@ucsc.edu

SUMMARY:2026 San Manuel Powwow
DESCRIPTION:San Manuel Pow Wow is a three-day celebration free to the public and features Southern California traditional bird singers and dancers\, as well as North American and Canadian dancers and drum singing groups. In addition\, there is also vending from artisans representing Indian tribal nations from all across North America and Canada. \nSince its beginning in 1996\, the San Manuel Pow Wow has remained a celebration of Indigenous cultures and a symbol or Indigenous resiliency–open to all in the spirit of friendship. \nDuring the three-day event\, the Pow Wow is a sacred space where people from across Indian Country can share their traditions\, spirituality and individual style through sounds\, motion and art. Native American dishes–such as crowd-favorite foods like fry bread–as well as a diverse array of authentic Native American traditional crafts and fine art will be available for purchase from vendors. \nSan Manuel is proud to present more than $250\,000 in cash prizes\, which will be awarded to contestants competing in the Native American dancing and singing competitions.
