SUMMARY:A Recipe for Food Sovereignty with Sara Calvosa Olson
DESCRIPTION:Join cookbook author Sara Calvosa Olson for a discussion on sustainable\, culturally appropriate\, and ecologically sound food systems. Try your hand at cracking acorns and enjoy samples of acorn muffins. The library is hosting a gathering on the lawn outside the North Branch\, so feel free to bring a blanket or low-back lawn chair to sit on. All ages welcome. Check out Sara’s cookbook\, Chími nu’am : native California foodways for the contemporary kitchen\, from the library. \nAbout Sara and Chími Nu’am:\nIn this sumptuous cookbook\, Sara Calvosa Olson (Karuk) reimagines some of the oldest foods in California for home cooks today. Meaning “Let’s eat!” in the Karuk language\, Chími Nu’am shares the author’s delicious and inventive takes on Native food styles from across California. Over seventy seasonal recipes centered on a rich array of Indigenous ingredients follow the year from Fall (elk chili beans\, acorn crepes) to Winter (wild boar pozole\, huckleberry hand pies) to Spring (wildflower spring rolls\, peppernut mole chicken) to Summer (blackberry braised smoked salmon\, acorn milk freezer pops). Special sections offer guidance on acorn preparation\, traditional uses of proteins\, and mindful ingredient sourcing. Calvosa Olson has spent many years connecting her family’s foodways with a growing community\, and these recipes\, techniques\, and insights invite everyone to Calvosa Olson’s table. Designed as an accessible entry for people beginning their journey toward a decolonized diet\, Chími Nu’am welcomes readers in with Calvosa Olson’s politically perceptive and irresistibly funny writing. With more than 100 photographs\, this cookbook is a culinary gift that will add warmth and mouthwatering aromas to any kitchen.

SUMMARY:Sierra Mono Museum 53rd Annual Indian Fair Days & Pow Wow
DESCRIPTION:Public welcome\, food & craft vendors\, dance competition! \nA Pow Wow\, or cultural celebration\, as it was called in former times\, is a truly family event growing out of the economic\, social\, and cultural experiences of many Native American tribes. Pow Wows allow people to come together to sing\, dance\, make friends\, renew old friendships\, and enjoy arts and crafts. To many people today\, pow wows have spiritual and religious significance. Some people can trace the word “Pow wow” to the Algonquin language\, saying how the Europeans used the word to refer to a council meeting. \nToday\, Pow Wows have become an inter-tribal event and are a time when older customs and ways are brought to the present day and age. It is more than just Indians dancing and singing. These cultural events help to solidify Indian communities as well as provide an opportunity to teach and learn many traditional customs. Pow wows are held throughout the year\, but mainly in the summertime when participants and spectators have more space to explore and practice singing and dancing. \n  \nFor more information: \nPhone: (559) 877-2115 \nEmail: monomuseum@gmail.com
