She researches Indigenous feminisms\, California Indians\, Environmental Justice\, Traditional Ecological Knowledge\, and decolonization. \nHer book: We Are Dancing For You: Native feminisms and the revitalization of women’s coming-of-age ceremonies received “Best First Book in Native American and Indigenous Studies” at the 2019 Native American Indigenous Studies Association Conference. \nThis talk explores Dr. Risling Baldy’s current research on Indigenous Feminist interventions and Native Academic futures and the role of Indigenous and Native American Studies to redefine “success” in the university and beyond. \nShe’ll probably also try to convince you to give all the land back.

This new book is a powerful collection that details how California’s Indigenous communities are resisting the legacies of forcible loss of land\, violence\, and genocide. Contributors speak on a variety of issues that affect Native California communities today while also offering urgent wisdom. The panelists include Terria Smith (Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla)\, Rose Soza War Soldier (Mountain Maidu/Cahuilla/Luiseño)\, Viola Le Beau  (Hammawi Band of the Pit River Nation; Cahuilla/Maidu/Cheyenne River Sioux descendent)\, and Michelle LaPena (Pit River Tribe). \nAfter the panel conversation\, there will be a book signing. Books will be available to purchase at the event. Light refreshments will be served after the program as well. \nThis is a free event. Details coming soon. \nGerald Clarke is an enrolled member of the Cahuilla Band of Indians and lives on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. When not creating artwork or serving as Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California\, Riverside\, Gerald oversees the Clarke family cattle ranch and remains heavily involved in Cahuilla culture. He is a frequent lecturer\, speaking about Native art\, culture and issues. He serves on the Cahuilla Tribal Council and works on issues affecting the tribe. When not working\, Clarke participates in Bird Singing\, a traditional form of singing that tells the cosmology of the Cahuilla people.

Watch and discuss the short animated film “Aikane” based on a Queer Kanaka Maoli love story and have a report back from the ‘ataaxum Pomkwaan delegation that attended @baaits_sf 2S Powwow in San Francisco this past weekend.\n🌈\nThis workshop is the first one in a series of political education workshops that ‘ataaxum Pomkwaan and United ‘ataaxum will be co-hosting during the winter and spring seasons.
