SUMMARY:Red Dress Day Community Event for MMIP
DESCRIPTION:Daughters of Mother Earth\, led by Chumash Elder Julie Tumamait-Stenslie and other grassroots intertribal women community leaders\, are hosting and a Red Dress Day Community Event for MMIP. The Primary goal of the gathering is to give voice to California’s missing and murdered Indigenous People and their families.  For too long\, Indigenous People have been invisible throughout the state which has the largest population of Native Americans out of any state.  Our fiscal sponsor is the Tribal Trust Foundation (located in Santa Barbara) and our Keynote Speaker is Melissa Skeet (Dine) who works full time in the MMIP movement and a survivor of relationship violence.  This event is a free in person gathering open to general public\, hoping to increase awareness in both Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. \nWe will be joining both the state and nationwide efforts to increase awareness\, advocacy and resources for support of MMIP while celebrating our traditional ways of knowing and healing. Our event does involve a moderated panel with a local DA\, law enforcement\, and academic researchers identifying solutions to stop the crisis\, address problems with implementations of Feather Alert\, and ongoing problems of under reporting.

SUMMARY:Night Out at the Museum: An Evening with author Cheewa James
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to invite you to the next Night Out at the Museum: An Evening with author Cheewa James on Saturday April 13 at 7pm\, doors open at 6:30pm. Cheewa will discuss her family’s and tribe’s history of the Modoc Wars. Cheewa\, a member of Modoc Tribe of Oklahoma\, researched her Modoc ancestry for years and was captivated by the events of the Modoc War. The Modoc War was one of the costliest Indian wars every fought. During the six-month Modoc War\, 55 warriors were against 1\,000 soldiers in one of the most rugged and rocky terrains on the California and Oregon border. Cheewa explores the events of the Modoc War through firsthand accounts and oral tradition while also connecting with her family members living through the conflict. Her book\, Modoc: The Tribe That Wouldn’t Die\, explores her extensive research and family ties to the survivors of the Modoc Wars. \nCopies of her book will be available at the museum for purchase. This is a free event and welcomes visitors of all ages. Light refreshments will be served. This program is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services Inspire! Grant for Small Museums.

After turning forty\, she decided to write for real and has been published by Hobart Pulp\, The Brooklyn Review\, and Diagram. She is pursuing an MFA in Fiction from the Institute for American Indian Arts. She won the Katharine Bakeless Nason Award in Fiction for the 2023 Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and was a finalist for the 2023 Sewanee Review Nonfiction contest. She teaches literature and lives in Oakland with a free-roaming lionhead rabbit named Betty who is two pounds but can eat a tunnel through a couch. \nJennifer Elise Foerster is the author of three books of poetry\, most recently The Maybe-Bird\, and served as the Associate Editor of When the Light of the World Was Subdued\, Our Songs Came Through: A Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry. She is the recipient of a NEA Creative Writing Fellowship\, a Lannan Foundation Writing Residency Fellowship\, and was a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Poetry at Stanford. Jennifer received her PhD in English and Literary Arts from the University of Denver\, her MFA from the Vermont College of the Fine Arts\, and is an alumna of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). Jennifer teaches for the Rainier Writing Workshop and the Institute of American Indian Arts. She is also the Literary Assistant to the 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate\, Joy Harjo. Foerster grew up living internationally\, is of European (German/Dutch) and Mvskoke descent and is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma. She lives in San Francisco. \nIbe Liebenberg is an enrolled citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. He lives in Chico\, California and has worked as a firefighter with Cal Fire for the last sixteen seasons. He is a lecturer at Chico State University. He is a recent graduate from the MFA program at the Institute of American Indian Arts in both poetry and fiction. His work has appeared in POETRY Magazine\, The ThreePenny Review\, Ecotone\, North American Review\, Beloit Poetry Journal\, Sugar House Review\, American Journal of Poetry\, Blackbird\, and a finalist of the 2023 James Welch poetry prize\, Poetry Northwest. Winner of the Tribal College Journals 2023 student creative writing contest in both fiction and poetry\, his poetry manuscript was a recent finalist for the 2024 Sowell Emerging Writers Prize. \nDeborah Jackson Taffa’s debut book\, Whiskey Tender\, has received advanced praise from ELLE Magazine\, “The Best (and Most Anticipated) Nonfiction Books in 2024\,” The NY Times\, “17 New Books Coming in February\,” Publishers Weekly “Memoirs & Biographies: Top 10\,” The Millions “Most Anticipated\,” Electric Literature\, “Books by Women of Color to Read\,” San Francisco Chronicle “New Books to Cozy Up With.” With fellowships from the NEA in Prose\, PEN America\, Tin House\, A Public Space\, MacDowell\, Rona Jaffe\, and the NY State Summer Writer’s Institute\, Deborah received her MFA in Iowa City. DESCRIPTION:Come join us on Sat\, Apr 06\, 2024 at 10:00 AM for an exciting event at AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles. \nStorytelling and Cultural Sharing \nMembers of the Ti’at Society will share stories of Moomat Ahiko and cultural traditions related to seafaring and ocean stewardship. An exhibit of images and videos will show the life and birth of Moomat Ahiko. \nCommunity Dialogue \nA facilitated discussion will allow participants to reflect on: the connections between climate change\, urban development\, and Indigenous cultures. Participants will learn about ways to support Indigenous communities in preserving their maritime traditions. \nCordage Weaving and Fishing Net Demonstration \nMembers of the Ti’at Society will lead a demonstration for volunteers and participants to learn to weave cordage made of plant fibers such as dogbane\, nettle\, sea grass\, milkweed\, or willow. Fishing net demonstration will bridge the connection between the land and the ocean. These traditional skills are essential for boat building and will provide volunteers and participants with a hands-on experience of Tongva culture. \n\n\n\n\nVolunteer Appreciation and Volunteer Page Launch \nAt the end of the event\, there will be a brief ceremony to thank volunteers for their hard work.
