SUMMARY:Sierra Mono Museum 52nd Annual Indian Fair Days & Pow Wow
DESCRIPTION:Public welcome\, food & craft vendors\, dance competition! \nA Pow Wow\, or cultural celebration\, as it was called in former times\, is a truly family event growing out of the economic\, social\, and cultural experiences of many Native American tribes. Pow Wows allow people to come together to sing\, dance\, make friends\, renew old friendships\, and enjoy arts and crafts. To many people today\, pow wows have spiritual and religious significance. Some people can trace the word “Pow wow” to the Algonquin language\, saying how the Europeans used the word to refer to a council meeting. \nToday\, Pow Wows have become an inter-tribal event and are a time when older customs and ways are brought to the present day and age. It is more than just Indians dancing and singing. These cultural events help to solidify Indian communities as well as provide an opportunity to teach and learn many traditional customs. Pow wows are held throughout the year\, but mainly in the summertime when participants and spectators have more space to explore and practice singing and dancing. \nThe Pow Wow Committee works throughout the year to plan this exciting event held on the first weekend of August each year.   \nStarts: August 03\, 2024 \nOccurs: Every day until August 04\, 2024\nLocation: North Fork Recreation Center\n33507 Road 230\, North Fork\, CA 93643 \nView Website \nPhone: (559) 877-2115 \nEmail: monomuseum@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Billy Mills - Book Signing/Meet & Greet
DESCRIPTION:Event Details:\nDate/Time – 08/17/2024 (11:00 am to 1:00 pm)\nLocation – 2618 K Street\, Sacramento\, CA State Indian Museum SHP\nCost – Free\n\nDescription:\nBilly Mills\, Oglala Lakota\, Olympic 10\,000 meter run gold medal winner and author\, will be at the State Indian Museum on August 17th signing copies of his new children’s book\, Wings of an Eagle. Mr. Mills will have just returned from the Olympics in Paris and is eager to share his incredible journey with you. Meet and talk with him and get your book (or your gift book) signed by the author (while supplies last)!\n\nThis is a free public event hosted by our non-profit partner\, the California Indian Heritage Center Foundation. There is a separate charge to visit the State Indian Museum.\n\nBilly Mills Bio:\nBilly Mills was born on June 30\, 1938 in Pine Ridge\, South Dakota. He is Oglala Lakota (Sioux) and grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Billy did not have an easy childhood. Surrounded by poverty and orphaned at the age of 12\, he started running to channel his energy into something positive. In high school\, his gift for running become more apparent as he set records in numerous track events. He went on to earn a track scholarship from the University of Kansas and then served as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps.\n\nAt the 1964 Olympics\, he shocked the world and came from behind to win the gold medal in the 10\,000 meters race. At the time\, he set a world record of 28 minutes\, 24.4 seconds and is still the only American to ever win a gold medal in the 10K event. His win was an upset that has been called the second greatest moment in Olympic history.\n\nIn Lakota culture\, someone who achieves great success has a ‘giveaway’ to thank the support system of family and friends who helped him achieve his goal. As part of his effort to give back to his community\, Billy helped found Running Strong for American Indian Youth and became the organization’s National Spokesperson. Today Billy travels over 300 days every year. He visits Native American communities throughout the U.S. and speaks to youth about healthy lifestyles and taking pride in their heritage.

SUMMARY:Informative Lecture: Unrecognized in California
DESCRIPTION:Federal Acknowledgement and the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians\nYou are invited to an informative lecture by Dr. Olivia Chilcote who will talk about her newly released book\, Unrecognized in California\, which tells the story of the San Luis Rey Band’s efforts to gain recognition through the Federal Acknowledgment Process. In the context of the history and experience of her tribal community\, Chilcote traces the tensions and contradictions—but also the limits and opportunities—surrounding federal recognition for California Indians. SUMMARY:Future Imaginaries: Indigenous Art\, Fashion\, Technology
DESCRIPTION:September 7\, 2024 – June 21\, 2026 \nSamuel & Minna Grodin Gallery \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n\nFuture Imaginaries explores the rise of Futurism in contemporary Indigenous art as a means of enduring colonial trauma\, creating alternative futures and advocating for Indigenous technologies in a more inclusive present and sustainable future. Over 50 artworks are on display\, some interspersed throughout the museum\, creating unexpected encounters and dialogues between contemporary Indigenous creations and historic Autry works. Artists such as Andy Everson\, Ryan Singer and Neil Ambrose Smith wittily upend pop-culture icons by Indigenizing sci-fi characters and storylines; Wendy Red Star places Indigenous people in surreal spacescapes wearing fantastical regalia; Virgil Ortiz brings his own space odyssey\, ReVOlt 1680/2180\, to life in a new\, site-specific installation. By intermingling science fiction\, self-determination\, and Indigenous technologies across a diverse array of Native cultures\, Future Imaginaries envisions sovereign futures while countering historical myths and the ongoing impact of colonization\, including environmental degradation and toxic stereotypes.
