SUMMARY:Gallery Talk with Brenda Mallory
DESCRIPTION:Join the museum for a Gallery Talk with Brenda Mallory.  The artist will discuss her portfolio of works and several of the pieces included in the solo exhibition: In the Absence of Instruction on view at the Gorman Museum from Sep 18\, 2023 – Jan 26\, 2025. \nBrenda Mallory’s mixed media sculptural works are comprised of a variety of materials including cloth\, fibers\, beeswax\, and found objects.  By creating multiple forms that are joined with crude hardware that imply tenuous connections or repairs\, her work addresses ideas of interference and disruption in long-established systems of nature and human cultures. \nMallory lives in Portland\, Oregon but grew up in Oklahoma and is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. She holds a BA in Linguistics & English from UCLA and a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art. She is a recipient of the The Hallie Ford Fellowship\, the Eiteljorg Contemporary Native Art Fellowship\, the Native Arts and Culture Foundation Fellowship in Visual Art and the Ucross Native Fellowship. \nAll are welcome.\nReception to follow.\nParking and admission is free.

SUMMARY:Fernando Mission's connection to the 1824 Chumash Revolt
DESCRIPTION:Ahead of Indigenous People’s Day next week\, the organization is spotlighting upcoming supported programs such as “Resistance and Persistence” at the Oakbrook Chumash Indian Museum in Thousand Oaks\, which is recognizing the 200th anniversary of the 1824 Chumash Revolt against several of the Spanish missions established in Chumash lands. \nThis little-known chapter of history highlights the cultural resistance of Indigenous peoples to the harsh environment of colonialism and establishes context for the ongoing cultural revitalization efforts of Chumash people today. Join the museum  October 12 for this special program of Alan Salazar speaking on Fernando Mission’s connection to the 1824 Chumash Revolt.

SUMMARY:Protecting Sacred Land
DESCRIPTION:Protecting Sacred Land: Online talk \nIsrael\, with full U.S. support\, has expanded the year long genocide in Gaza into regional warfare now involving Lebanon and Iran. In the meantime\, sacred land for Indigenous Palestinians is threatened by increased settler colonialism. History reminds us that settler colonial takeover of Indigenous land is accompanied by military warfare and weaponization of religious dogma. \nNative people indigenous to Turtle Island have experienced this historical reality\, yet have also sustained a spirituality to reclaim and protect sacred land guided by ancestors who lift up values honoring the beauty of Creation and all of the Creator’s blessed creatures. \nJoin this online gathering sharing stories from two different parts of the world\, connected by spirit. \n10/24 10am Pacific / 8pm Palestine \nRegister: bit.ly/protectingsacredland \nCorrina Gould\, Co-Director of the Sogorea Te Land Trust and Tribal spokesperson for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan will speak about their historic victory\, lessons learned\, and the spiritual grounding that has sustained their efforts and inspired their dreams for the rematriation of sacred land. Corrina will also underscore why spiritual solidarity with indigenous Palestinians is significant at this moment in time. \nFahmi Manasra is a professional tour guide and steward of a family farm in the village of Wadi Foquin located in the Bethlehem District of the West Bank. He is currently protecting sacred land from settler colonialism.. During the Olive Harvest season\, he will share stories about the history of his village\, their relationship to the land\, as well as the apartheid practices and colonial tools which threaten their future existence. \n[ID: an event flyer showing flowers blooming at Lisjan in Oakland and in Palestine. SUMMARY:Yáamay Anthology Panel
DESCRIPTION:Yáamay is an anthology of Indigenous poetry\, artwork\, and essays specific to what is now known as Southern California. Collectively\, these pieces portray the multifarious effects of colonization on Indigenous people of this area\, from the California Mission system\, to the traumatic assimilationist policies that are still felt today. At the same time\, a focus on ancestral teachings\, the nostalgia of growing up on the rez\, and the joys of (self)love and independence can be found in a way that defies these wounds. Join Yáamay contributors as they speak on their art practices and experiences as Indigenous women. \nPanelists include: Camaray Davalos\, Avelaka Macarro\, Marlene’ Dusek\, and Alexis Munoa Dyer. The panel will be moderated by Juan Reynoso from the Queer Sol Collective. \nThis panel is FREE admission to the public; RSVPs encouraged.
