SUMMARY:Revitalizing Cultural Fire Across California: A Discussion with Indigenous Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology at Cal State East Bay: \nIndigenous Californians have used cultural burns to mitigate wildfire spread\, improve species abundance\, and enhance resource quality since time immemorial. However\, colonial fire exclusion policies and native land dispossession has hindered the application of cultural fire. As a result\, California is experiencing wildfires of abnormal size and severity\, and Indigenous communities are struggling to access fire-dependent foods\, materials\, and medicines critical to their livelihood and spiritual practice. \nRegister at – https://csueb.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYucemsqDgvHtLD-ek4GIyVqCQGmvra-Fmw%20

SUMMARY:NEA/ Big Read Culinary History Panel: The Rise of Native American Foods
DESCRIPTION:By Culinary Historians of Southern California: \nAll aspects of Native American culture were deliberately suppressed beginning in the 19th century\, with food given special attention. Separating native people from their traditional diet was intended to make them more dependent on government agencies\, and was designed to erode their connection to their land. That traditional knowledge about harvesting\, processing\, and cooking native foods was passed on in secret\, but the secret is now out. A new generation of Native American scholars\, chefs\, and educators has brought that diet back into the light\, and it appears in restaurants\, books\, and as a recovered element in the lives of tribal members. In this program\, which is produced by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs in conjunction with the NEA Big Read and the Culinary Historians of Southern California\, a culinary historian moderates a panel of Indigenous chefs\, educators\, and historians who are leading the reevaluation of native foods. \nRegister at – https://www.eventbrite.com/e/nea-big-read-culinary-history-panel-the-rise-of-native-american-foods-tickets-147887291871?mc_cid=340b870ef7&mc_eid=2fbeceec04

SUMMARY:Missions & Tribes: Including Native Perspectives in the Historical Record
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association: \nWhen Andrew A. Galvan (Ohlone\, Bay Miwok\, Plains Miwok and Patwin Indian) was named the curator of San Francisco’s famed Old Mission Dolores in 2004\, he became the first American Indian to oversee a California Mission. At the time\, he joked he wanted to hang a banner in front of the Mission that read “Under New Management.” \nHis challenges were many\, including presenting a comprehensive\, objective and critical interpretation of history—a telling that frequently misinterpreted or even ignored the contributions of his Ohlone descendants whose ancestral homes were located throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. \n“Proudly\, I will tell anyone who will listen\, that the missions were built by Indians and for Indians. There is much that has been neglected in the telling of the history of the Mission Indians. Because of the Spanish invasion\, the native world was overwhelmed. The environment was dramatically damaged with the introduction of foreign plants and animals. The flu and measles epidemics were very destructive. It was a time of survival and my ancestors came into the missions to survive\,” said Galvan. \nDuring this webinar\, Andy will detail his personal journey and how he reconciled the history of the area tribes with the story previously being told by the California Missions. He will further share tips for other curators of Native American history—at both tribal and non-Native facilities\, alike—on steps they can take to present a more complete version of history with the visiting public. \n“(It) is comparatively easy to point out mistakes and simple to indicate errors. It is totally different and difficult to correct those mistakes and to supplant those errors with critical truth. Such is the task before all of us who study and write about the Alta California Franciscan Missions. It must be realized that such an accomplishment is necessarily slow\, tedious and painstaking.” \n  \nTo register visit – https://aianta.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sWSmN8nLSTe66sG_EXyHJg
