SUMMARY:Exhibition: Traditional Tastes
DESCRIPTION:Step back in time and discover the deep history of seaweed gathering\, smelt fishing\, and eeling in Humboldt Bay at the Clarke Historical Museum! \nDid you know that Wiyot and Yurok peoples have been fishing smelt along the Northern California coast for over 1\,300 years? Using A-frame nets and dip nets\, these expert fishers gathered smelt—also known as Candlefish—and dried them in the warm sand\, a time-honored tradition passed through generations.\nMeanwhile\, eeling at night along the Mad River was a skill requiring patience\, precision\, and beautifully crafted eel hooks. Once caught\, these prized fish were filleted\, smoked\, and enjoyed for their rich taste and nutritional value.\nExplore the tools\, techniques\, and cultural significance of these fishing traditions at our “Traditional Tastes” exhibit! \nNow on display at the Clarke Historical Museum. Come experience the heritage of Humboldt Bay’s Indigenous foodways—because history is more than stories\, it’s the flavors\, the traditions\, and the connection to the land.

SUMMARY:Tides Converge Film Series presents: Funding Indigenous
DESCRIPTION:Come join the organization for a Tides Converge Film Series screening of Funding Indigenous\, a series of short documentaries produced by the Cultural Conservancy on March 5\, 2025 from 1-3pm. This event is free\, and light refreshments are provided. \nThese unique documentaries amplify and articulate the movement indigenizing philanthropy with Indigenous people. Personal and collective stories interweave with Indigenous knowledge in global reciprocity. \nThis project includes:\n• Four ~20-minute poetic Documentary Profiles profiling key Indigenous leaders in this movement\n• Eight long-form Oral Histories delving into Indigenous knowledge\, leaders’ life experiences\, pivotal relationships\, events and protocols \nThese videos are for Indigenous communities seeking greater economic and narrative sovereignty; philanthropists and policy-makers seeking greater equity; and for teachers and youth seeking Indigenous knowledge and wisdom. All videos — from Indonesia\, Kenya\, Nicaragua\, Mexico\, France and Turtle Island — were filmed in collaboration with local Indigenous communities and videographers\, who collaborated in the 2-year participatory production process of documentary production training and collective story crafting. \nThis project is a partnership between Tamalpais Trust\, The Cultural Conservancy\, Pawanka Fund\, Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara (Indonesia)\, Centro para la Autonomía y Desarollo de los Pueblos Indígenas (Nicaragua)\, and Kivulini Trust (Kenya).

SUMMARY:5th Annual Native & Indigenous Research & Arts Symposium (NIRAS)
DESCRIPTION:Howka (Kumeyaay greeting)! The Native Resource Center (NRC) at San Diego State University (SDSU) warmly invites you to participate in their 5th Annual Native & Indigenous Research & Arts Symposium (NIRAS) taking place from March 6-7\, 2025 at Scripps Cottage on the SDSU campus. \nNIRAS serves as an academic space to uplift diverse Native and Indigenous research\, narratives\, art\, issues\, and knowledges. NIRAS aims to center Native and Indigenous epistemological and methodological frameworks that are otherwise ignored within dominant Western academic settings. They also take a transnational approach to Indigeneity that disrupts settler borders and uplifts Indigenous experiences across the globe. Additionally\, in honor of the Native American Music and Dance Conference organized by Dr. Vince Whipple (Lakota/Diné) in 2022 – the center is excited to continue to integrate the arts as a prominent part of our symposium. NIRAS will include visual performances by local and regional Indigenous artists. \nVisit link below for more information on submission guidelines. Proposals due Friday\, February 14\, 2025 by 11:59pm.  \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeExXFgRpdnEZb5Er0zXURCDyU7mRik1ar85pi1b-Kap1gNjQ/viewform
