SUMMARY:MAATHAAW: The Fire Within Us - Panel discussion and trailer screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Nat at Night for a special screening of the Indigenous-led film MAATHAAW: The Fire Within Us\, and hear from director and producer Andrew Pittman as he shares about the creation of this film. \nThe Kumeyaay people are the original stewards of the land we call home today and on which this event is hosted. For millennia\, they have cared for their land in a variety of ways—including through fire.   \nJoin us for a screening of the extended trailer for MAATHAAW: The Fire Within Us\, an Indigenous-led film that documents the cultural\, emotional\, and scientific relationships of Southern California Tribes with the gift of fire. The film highlights the continued resilience and vibrancy of Indigenous communities and practices. At a time when the Southwest is facing unprecedented challenges related to climate change and wildfires\, this film brings Indigenous voices to the forefront and acknowledges their leadership in climate adaptation and resilience.  \nAfter the screening\, Director and Producer Andrew Pittman\, alongside additional expert panelists\, will delve into the details of the documentary and what has gone into its creation. At the end of the session\, there will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.  \nTickets for this talk include admission to the Museum for Nat at Night. Doors open at 5 PM. Theater doors open at 6:30 PM. \nTickets: $23 for non-members |  $12 for members

SUMMARY:The Storyteller's Hands: Carvings And Teachings of Bun Lucas
DESCRIPTION:Santa Rosa Junior College Multicultural Museum spotlight on Milton “Bun” Lucas\nMilton “Bun” Lucas (1925-1996)\, a revered elder of Pomo and Miwok descent from the Stewarts Point/Kashia Pomo community\, was a powerful spiritual leader dedicated to keeping his people’s cultural traditions alive. Through Native dance and song\, Bun passed on the rich origin stories of the Pomo and Coast Miwok peoples\, reconnecting generations to their heritage and ancestral roots. \nFrom a young age\, Bun honed his skills as a woodcarver\, starting with his grandfather’s pocket knife. He spent his life creating intricate carvings of animals and human figures\, selling them at local venues like Midgley’s Flea Market in Sebastopol. His work was mentioned in a 1979 Press Democrat article\, showcasing his passion for sharing his culture through art.

SUMMARY:Presentation: California Truth and Healing Council
DESCRIPTION:Listen and learn about the findings of the California Truth and Healing Council investigation of the lasting effects of the genocide committed against California Native Americans. In 2019\, the California Truth and Healing Council (CTHC) was created after Governor Newsom recognized and formally apologized for the genocide committed against Native American people in the early days of California statehood. Through present-day oral histories and revisiting early documents\, the CTHC will present an official report on its findings to clarify the past and recommend possible avenues of restorative justice. \nIn addition to the report\, the CTHC has engaged Jacob Kornbluth\, an Emmy-winning director of TV\, film\, and theater\, to produce the documentary film\, “We’re Still Here.” The film follows California Tribal Affairs Secretary Christina Snider-Ashtari (Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians) and Deputy Tribal Affairs Secretary Loretta Miranda (Morongo Band of Mission Indians)\, two California Native women who lead and convene the Council. This film project aims to educate and engage wider audiences about the diverse histories and nuances of California Indian Country\, all while featuring irreplaceable personal narratives from California Native people and examining the tensions of existing as a California Native person after a state-perpetrated genocide as the state works towards healing. \nTo find out more information about the California Truth & Healing Council\, please visit tribalaffairs.ca.gov/cthc/
