DESCRIPTION:Occidental’s Community Book Program Presents: Responsibility and Reciprocal Relationships with the Land: Indigenous Knowledge\, Conservation\, and Land Return. \nJoin Oxy Professor of Biology Gretchen North\, Celestina Castillo\, Executive Director of the Center for Community Based Learning\, artist and scientist Samantha Morales Johnson\, Tina Calderon\, Tongva Language Committee member\, Bryce Lewis-Smith\, Research Assistant at UW’s Center for American Indian & Indigenous Studies\, and Jesus Alvarez\, president of the Tataviam Land Conservancy for a dynamic conversation around indigenous knowledge\, conservation and land return. This panel was curated by Celestina Castillo and Professor Gretchen North. \nOccidental’s 2023-24 community book selection\,Braiding Sweetgrass Indigenous Wisdom\, Scientific Knowledge\, and the Teachings of Plants\, by Potawatomi professor Robin Wall Kimmerer\, is about the role of Indigenous knowledge as an alternative or complementary approach to Western mainstream scientific methodologies. We invite all community members to read the book and engage in our year long programming to engage with themes of the book. Learn more at oxy.edu/community-book-program. \nBefore the lecture\, engage with Oxy Arts fall exhibition\, The Iridescence of Knowing\, a group exhibition exploring the rich lineage of Indigenous cultural production in Tovaangar\, known today as the greater Los Angeles basin. \nABOUT THE PANELISTS\nSamantha Morales Johnson (she/her) is an Afro-indigenous (Gabrielino/Tongva) multidisciplinary artist\, environmental scientist\, and learning ethnobotanist. She received her B.S. in marine biology before attending graduate school for her certificate in science illustration. Samantha has worked with institutions like Pitzer college creating illustrated educational material for 4th and 5th grade environmental science curriculum aligning with California science standards and traditional Indigenous environmental knowledge. She has also created material around and speaks often on the campaign Protect White Sage\, a social media initiative hoping to bring awareness to wild white sage poaching in the incense and spirituality movement. She focuses on educational artwork\, traditional craft making like basket weaving\, and environmental science. As a basket weaver\, she’s learning ethnobotany\, land care\, and restorative justice. Samantha’s work is inspired by resistance against climate change and the colonist roots underneath the environmental distresses we experience today. \nTina Calderon\, Culture Bearer https://lariverpublicartproject.org/info Tina is of Gabrielino Tongva\, Chumash and Yoeme descent. She is a singer\, songwriter\, poet\, traditional dancer and storyteller. She is wife\, mother\, grandmother\, sister and auntie to many. To date she has composed over a dozen songs in her ancestral languages of Tongvé and Chumash. Additionally\, Tina strongly believes in honoring her ancestors by sharing their history\, educating others about Indigenous truths and inspiring others to respect the land\, waters\, sacred elements and environment. Instagram @lalas_song \nBryce Lewis-Smith\, graduate of Occidental College\, is a Potawatomi environmentalist at Better World Group with a passion for Tribal Sovereignty\, environmental justice\, and climate action. He recently graduated with his Masters in Marine and Environmental Affairs from the University of Washington and is a member of the Potawatomi Dreaming Collective which is working on reconnecting diasporic Citizen Potawatomi Nation Tribal members back with traditional Anishinaabe Aki\, traditions\, and ceremony. His research focuses on the interplay of kinship responsibilities and climate resiliency. \nJesus Alvarez\, is the President of the Tataviam Land Conservancy. Mr. Alvarez obtained a B.A. in Education in 1993 and spent his career after college working in early childhood education. He currently serves as a Financial Aid Representative for California State University Northridge. As a Lifelong resident of the San Fernando Valley\, Jesus volunteers with various educational programs for the Tataviam Tribe and groups throughout the San Fernando Valley. Jesus’ love of the land and enjoyment of the natural world led him to become a member of the TLC. Through its work\, Jesus would like to increase understanding of California’s native flora and to preserve it for future generations by developing programs that promote the use of locally native and regionally appropriate plants throughout Tataviam homelands in projects as small as personal gardens or as large as regional commercial projects. California State University of Northridge Institute of Sustainability and Programs and Inclusion are collaborating with Jesus to have input in tribal representation of its grounds. He is a member of Mapping Los Angeles Landscape History Project and California Rare Fruit Growers. Jesus spends his weekends gardening\, grafting\, and practicing other horticultural techniques. SUMMARY:Refocusing Your Cultural Lens to the Landscape: Presentation and Discussion with Craig Torres
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an educational presentation and discussion with Craig Torres in which attendees will examine their relationship to the natural environment. \nCraig Torres (Tongva) descended from the Indigenous communities of the Yaavetum (Los Angeles) and Komiikravetam (Santa Monica Canyon) that existed in the Los Angeles Basin. The descendants are more commonly known today\, collectively as the Tongva or Gabrielino Indians of San Gabriel Mission. He is also descended from three of the founding families of Los Angeles pueblo in 1781. He is a member of the Traditional Council of Pimu and involved with Ti’at Society\, an organization focused on the revival of the traditional maritime culture of the Southern California coastal region and the Southern Channel Islands. He is an artist\, as well as a cultural educator\, presenter and consultant to schools\, culture and nature centers\, museums\, and city\, state\, and government agencies. \nCraig has also been involved with the organization Preserving Our Heritage and Chia Café\, which provides cooking demos and classes with California native plants. These activities also provide education on the importance of preserving native plants\, habitats\, and landscapes for future generations.

The Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza features the new Agua Caliente Cultural Museum\, The Spa at Séc-he that celebrates the Tribe’s ancient Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring\, a Gathering Plaza\, and an Oasis Trail. \n“The Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza provides an incredible opportunity for us to share and celebrate our history\, culture\, and traditions with this community and visitors from around the world\,” Tribal Chairman Reid D. Milanovich said. “Each federally recognized tribe throughout this country has a distinct culture that includes traditions\, language\, historic clothing\, and housing styles as well as historical food and medicine preparations. We want to share our culture with visitors through our authentic voice. This is our story\, in our own voice. We are here today just like we have been since time immemorial.” \nInspiration for the Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza design is rooted in Agua Caliente traditions such as basket weaving\, pottery (ollas)\, and bird songs\, and elements native to the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation including desert landscapes\, rock formations found in the Indian Canyons\, the Tahquitz Canyon waterfall\, and the Washingtonia filifera palm trees – the only palm tree native to the California desert. \nJCJ Architecture\, of Phoenix\, is the project designer. JCJ Architecture’s design concept for the Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza reflects the Tribe’s values and ongoing commitment to the Agua Caliente people. The Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza comprises outdoor spaces\, including the Gathering Plaza adjacent to the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring\, originally known as Séc-he (the Cahuilla term for “the sound of boiling water”). The Oasis Trail provides an interactive\, cultural learning environment. This trail mimics\, on a smaller scale\, the distinctive character\, geology\, flora\, and beauty of the nearby Tahquitz Canyon and Indian Canyons\, ancestral homes of the Agua Caliente people. \nThe new Museum is approximately 48\,000 square feet and features permanent exhibition space dedicated to the history and culture of the Agua Caliente people\, a dedicated changing gallery\, educational classroom\, adjacent teaching garden\, and meeting-event space. The Museum Store showcases art\, jewelry\, and other products sourced directly from Native American artists and Native American-owned businesses from across the nation. The Museum’s Creation Migration Theater welcomes guests with a 12-minute\, 360-degree animation of the Tribe’s creation story. \nThe Spa at Séc-he\, which opened earlier this year\, includes more than 72\,000 square feet to celebrate the ancient healing waters of the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring with treatment rooms\, men’s and women’s bathhouses\, a tranquility garden\, a salon\, fitness center\, outdoor pools\, and health-forward dining. The water from the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring is estimated to be upwards of 12\,000 years old and is unique as it contains a mineral make-up that has not been found anywhere else in the world. The Tribe has shared the healing water with visitors for more than 130 years. This new Spa is the fifth bathhouse or spa at the site\, with the first one operating in the late 1880s. \nBuilding upon the traditions of the Agua Caliente people and the world-renowned natural features of their ancestral lands\, the new Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza encompasses a wide-range of experiences and learning opportunities that convey the values and legacy of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. \n“The Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza is one of the most important achievements in our Tribe’s history\,” Chairman Milanovich said. “It allows us to share and celebrate our culture and educate guests about our history and who we are as a people. For us\, it’s a dream come true that has been in the making for 30 years. When we share our culture\, we preserve our culture.” \nAs an integral part of the Tribe’s vision initiated many years ago\, the Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza serves as a cornerstone to the long-term goals of the Tribe to share and celebrate its true identity. \nThe Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians is a federally recognized Indian Tribe located in Palm Springs\, California\, with more than 31\,500 acres of reservation lands\, which include portions of Palm Springs\, Cathedral City\, Rancho Mirage and portions of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountains. Then\, carve and decorate a soapstone amulet that you can wear home. All materials will be provided. \nFound throughout the region of Southern California\, soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a softer rock that has been used as a medium for carving in many cultures for thousands of years. \nLazaro Arvizu\, Jr. is an artist\, educator\, musician\, and researcher dedicated to the culture of the first people of Los Angeles. Born in the Los Angeles Basin\, he is knowledgeable of the landscape and cosmology of the Gabrielino culture. He has worked for over 20 years facilitating creative and meaningful cultural experiences to people of all ages and walks of life\, in many venues.
