SUMMARY:"Saging The World" Documentary Showing at the Malki Museum
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nSage smudging has become a viral trend. What’s the truth behind the smoke? \n“Saging” has become common in movies\, TV shows\, social media\, and cleansing rituals \n–people burning sage bundles in the hope of purifying space and clearing bad energy. \nInstead of healing\, the appropriated use of saging in popular culture is having a \nharmful effect. \n  \nIndigenous communities have tended a relationship with white sage for thousands of \ngenerations. White sage (Salvia apiana) only occurs in southern California and northern \nBaja California\, Mexico. Today\, poachers are stealing metric tons of this plant from the \nwild to supply international demand. Saging the World spotlights the ecological and \ncultural issues intertwined with white sage\, centering the voices of Native advocates \nwho have long protected and cherished this plant. \nThe short documentary was produced by Rose Ramirez\, Deborah Small\, and the \nCalifornia Native Plant Society to foster awareness and inspire action for white sage. \nFor more information on the film and ways to support white sage\, visit: cnps.org/sagingtheworld.

DESCRIPTION:Across what we now call California\, Indigenous communities are fighting to protect and preserve languages\, cultural practices\, and ways of being. From protests to protect sacred sites\, to advocacy for federal recognition and land return\, the fight to tend to\, relearn\, and expand Indigenous cultural practices is a continuous passion-filled struggle. \nJoin us for a conversation on Indigenous language and cultural revitalization with Two-Spirit Tongva/Ajachmem artist and tribal activist L. Frank and Ramaytush descendant and Founder of Muchia Te’ Indigenous Land Trust Catalina Gomes. Sharing their personal journeys of learning and reconnecting with their tribal languages\, L. Frank and Catalina discuss the fight for the visibility of Indigenous languages and cultural practices across California. \nL. Frank and Catalina invite you to examine what it means to revitalize Indigenous culture and language and to engage in pathways to be better allies to Indigenous communities on the front lines of this work. \nAdmission is $0-$20 \nIn person and Livestream

SUMMARY:Know We Are Here: Native Visibility in the University
DESCRIPTION:UC Berkeley\, which sits on native territory and was built with funds from stolen native lands\, has a dishearteningly low representation of Native American undergraduate students\, accounting for just 0.04% of the student body. The Native students who do gain admission to Berkeley must confront a culture that often negates indigenous forms of knowledge\, all while housing thousands of native human remains intended for scholarly study. This panel aims to delve into the challenges and experiences that Native individuals have faced navigating the university system.Additionally\, the discussion will touch upon relevant themes presented in the new anthology Know We Are Here: Voices of Native California Resistance\, edited by UC Berkeley alum Terria Smith M.J. ‘12. \n\nSpeakers/Panelists: Andrés Cediel\, Corrina Gould (Lisjan Ohlone)\, Phenocia Bauerle\, Dr. Rose Soza War Soldier (Mountain Maidu/Cahuilla/Luiseño\, enrolled member of Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians)\, Terria Smith (Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians) \n\nPlease register in advance. \n\n\n\nHosted by UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism\, Native American Student Development
