SUMMARY:Billy Mills - Book Signing/Meet & Greet
DESCRIPTION:Event Details:\nDate/Time – 08/17/2024 (11:00 am to 1:00 pm)\nLocation – 2618 K Street\, Sacramento\, CA State Indian Museum SHP\nCost – Free\n\nDescription:\nBilly Mills\, Oglala Lakota\, Olympic 10\,000 meter run gold medal winner and author\, will be at the State Indian Museum on August 17th signing copies of his new children’s book\, Wings of an Eagle. Mr. Mills will have just returned from the Olympics in Paris and is eager to share his incredible journey with you. Meet and talk with him and get your book (or your gift book) signed by the author (while supplies last)!\n\nThis is a free public event hosted by our non-profit partner\, the California Indian Heritage Center Foundation. There is a separate charge to visit the State Indian Museum.\n\nBilly Mills Bio:\nBilly Mills was born on June 30\, 1938 in Pine Ridge\, South Dakota. He is Oglala Lakota (Sioux) and grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Billy did not have an easy childhood. Surrounded by poverty and orphaned at the age of 12\, he started running to channel his energy into something positive. In high school\, his gift for running become more apparent as he set records in numerous track events. He went on to earn a track scholarship from the University of Kansas and then served as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps.\n\nAt the 1964 Olympics\, he shocked the world and came from behind to win the gold medal in the 10\,000 meters race. At the time\, he set a world record of 28 minutes\, 24.4 seconds and is still the only American to ever win a gold medal in the 10K event. His win was an upset that has been called the second greatest moment in Olympic history.\n\nIn Lakota culture\, someone who achieves great success has a ‘giveaway’ to thank the support system of family and friends who helped him achieve his goal. As part of his effort to give back to his community\, Billy helped found Running Strong for American Indian Youth and became the organization’s National Spokesperson. Today Billy travels over 300 days every year. He visits Native American communities throughout the U.S. and speaks to youth about healthy lifestyles and taking pride in their heritage.

SUMMARY:Future Imaginaries: Indigenous Art\, Fashion\, Technology
DESCRIPTION:September 7\, 2024 – June 21\, 2026 \nSamuel & Minna Grodin Gallery \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n\nFuture Imaginaries explores the rise of Futurism in contemporary Indigenous art as a means of enduring colonial trauma\, creating alternative futures and advocating for Indigenous technologies in a more inclusive present and sustainable future. Over 50 artworks are on display\, some interspersed throughout the museum\, creating unexpected encounters and dialogues between contemporary Indigenous creations and historic Autry works. Artists such as Andy Everson\, Ryan Singer and Neil Ambrose Smith wittily upend pop-culture icons by Indigenizing sci-fi characters and storylines; Wendy Red Star places Indigenous people in surreal spacescapes wearing fantastical regalia; Virgil Ortiz brings his own space odyssey\, ReVOlt 1680/2180\, to life in a new\, site-specific installation. By intermingling science fiction\, self-determination\, and Indigenous technologies across a diverse array of Native cultures\, Future Imaginaries envisions sovereign futures while countering historical myths and the ongoing impact of colonization\, including environmental degradation and toxic stereotypes.

SUMMARY:Autry After Hours | Future Imaginaries: Indigenous Fashion
DESCRIPTION:Join the museum for a fashion-focused tour of their latest exhibition Future Imaginaries: Indigenous Art\, Fashion\, Technology  by curator Amy Scott. \nSchedule: \n5:30 p.m. | Food and Beverages Available for Purchase \n6 p.m. | Museum Galleries Open \n7 p.m. | Fashion Tour by Amy Scott \n9 p.m. | Museum Closes \n  \nAbout the Tour: \nIndigenous peoples have been adorning themselves with custom clothing and regalia for centuries in ways that broadcast cultural identity\, aesthetics\, and continuity with ancestral traditions\, in which materials\, patterns\, colors\, and forms are carefully chosen for their visual\, spiritual\, and kinetic properties. Many of the works in the exhibition combine historical materials with newer ones including silk\, organza\, embroidery\, tulle\, and titanium. Some also feature recycled or found materials such as industrial laminate\, computer components\, mylar\, and geodes that speak to their relationship to their environment. \nWhen worn by Indigenous people and of Indigenous design\, these clothes speak to the ongoing significance and resilience of certain aesthetic and cultural traditions while carrying Indigenous knowledge forward\, from the high fashion runways of today into outer space and beyond\, or wherever the future might take us. \n  \n\nAutry After Hours: \n\nFuture Imaginaries: Indigenous Art\, Fashion\, Technology is among more than 70 exhibitions and programs presented as part of PST ART. Returning in September 2024 with its latest edition\, PST ART: Art & Science Collide\, this landmark regional event explores the intersections of art and science\, both past and present. PST ART is presented by Getty. For more information about PST ART: Art & Science Collide\, please visit: pst.art \nAdditional support for Future Imaginaries is provided by the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation\, the Ethnic Arts Council\, The Henry Luce Foundation\, The Mildred E. and Harvey S.
