SUMMARY:25th Annual Ward Valley "Ground Zero" Spiritual Gathering
DESCRIPTION:In 1997\, Greenaction joined with the Colorado River Native Nations Alliance and allies in the campaign to defeat plans by the government & US Ecology to build a nuclear waste dump on sacred lands at Ward Valley near the Colorado River. \nOn February 12th\, 1998\, Greenaction joined with the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe\, Chemehuvi\, Quechan\, Cocopah\, and Colorado River Tribes and many other allies to occupy the proposed dump site on federal land at Ward Valley. Together\, we barricaded the roads as tribal elders\, traditional singers and dancers began ongoing ceremonies — in defiance of a federal eviction order. \nThe standoff against federal police lasted 113 days\, ending in victory when the White House and federal government dropped plans for test drilling for the proposed dump. \nToday\, Ward Valley remains nuclear-free and is a sacred & protected place and a symbol that when people unite\, we can win against all odds.
