Then\, carve and decorate a soapstone amulet that you can wear home. All materials will be provided. \nFound throughout the region of Southern California\, soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a softer rock that has been used as a medium for carving in many cultures for thousands of years. \nLazaro Arvizu\, Jr. is an artist\, educator\, musician\, and researcher dedicated to the culture of the first people of Los Angeles. Born in the Los Angeles Basin\, he is knowledgeable of the landscape and cosmology of the Gabrielino culture. He has worked for over 20 years facilitating creative and meaningful cultural experiences to people of all ages and walks of life\, in many venues.

DESCRIPTION:The Indigenous Peoples’ Day Sunrise Gathering on October 9th and November 23rd\, is organized by the International Indian Treaty Council commemorating the 1969-71 occupation of Alcatraz by the Indians of All Tribes. It is a one-day events and is not the standard Alcatraz Island tour; all areas except for where the ceremony takes place will be closed and inaccessible to the public. \nNovember 23 Event: \nThe ticket booth opens at 3:15 AM and boats will depart Pier 33 at approximately 4:15 AM\, 4:30AM\, 4:45 AM\, 5:00AM\, 5:15 AM\, 5:30 AM\, 5:45 AM\, and 6:00 AM. We encourage you to purchase and print tickets on the web. Tickets can also be purchased by calling 415-981-7625 (ROCK) or from the ticket booth at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing.  General admission is $12.00 per person. Children under 5 years of age are free. \nPlease note there is absolutely no sale of merchandise of any kind allowed on Alcatraz Island\, at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing\, or on the sidewalk outside of Alcatraz Landing.
