Doors open at 2. \nTranslated\, the definition of “skoden” is Native slang “let’s go then” (used frequently on the FX series “Reservation Dogs”) In the context of the festival\, it serves as a powerful call to action  – both for the music\, and as motivation to to get out the Native vote. \nThe family-friendly event is free and open to the public\, and will feature food trucks (and free food – “Indian” tacos made from fry bread for the first 200 attendees)\, as well as Native vendors and information booths\, to help raise awareness and answer questions about the upcoming election and how it impacts Southern California Native communities. A ballot drop box is on site at Barnes Park. \n“Not everybody goes to a pow wow\, not everybody goes to a cultural event\,” says festival organizer Rene Williams\, CNVP’s Director of Strategic Initiatives. “Being able to connect with more community members in different ways is really important and it’s also great to celebrate our community in a different way. DESCRIPTION:Bassist\, singer\, and bandleader Mali Obomsawin performs music from their debut album Sweet Tooth\, a project that shines a light on the Indigenous history of jazz and expresses the vitality and contemporary nature of Indigenous culture. \nAn Abenaki from Odanak First Nation\, Obomsawin studied with the renowned cornetist and composer Taylor Ho Bynam at Dartmouth\, an institution originally founded in the 18th century to educate the Wabanaki people\, and they discovered the archived and unheard field recordings of their Odanak ancestors in storage – recordings that have been integrated into Sweet Tooth. \n\n\nThe Out of Your Head Records release is based around the concepts of adaptation and innovation in modernity\, a project both personal and universal to the stories of the Indiginous populations of the U.S. and Canada. This is a contemporary music\, and is not an expression of the bridging of worlds\, but shows how jazz and Indiginous culture is inextricably linked from the time that colonizers and militaries brought brass band instruments to Native lands. \nThrough their artistry\, Mali Obomsawin lifts their ancestral history of resistance and adaptation\, and carries on a proud tradition of Native jazz artists including Don Cherry\, Mildred Bailey\, Oscar Pettiford\, and many others.

Staged in a space that once housed thousands of Native ancestral remains and cultural materials\, Antíkoni makes us question what role museums have in caring for the dead. \nIn this timely retelling of a Greek classic\, a Nez Perce family is caught between the pressures of the outside world—where a Nationalist Party threatens to silence their history. Set in the near future\, Antíkoni must defend eternal truths\, Kreon rides the waves of changing politics\, and a Chorus of Aunties delivers raucous and wise traditional stories to guide them. \nJoin in the reclaiming of both a physical structure\, one that encased Native art and ancestors while dismissing humanity\, and a literary structure deemed the epitome of western theatre which blatantly disregards one of the world’s oldest forms of storytelling.
