DESCRIPTION:Created as part of the American Indian Cultural District’s Mapping Genocide Project\, this presentation aims to highlight the history of commemorating individuals who contributed to the genocide of American Indians through place names and public art in the San Francisco Civic Art Collection. \nThe illustrations by artist Jackie Fawn (Yurok/Washoe/Surigaonon) prompt reflection on the untold brutality imposed on Native peoples\, while celebrating the strength and resilience of survivors both historically and today. The map identifies thirty-seven street names in San Francisco\, as well the location of ten statues and/or monuments in the San Francisco Civic Art Collection that have contributed to the direct violence and attempted erasure of American Indian people.

When an artifact\, that was hidden away\, is stolen from their home on the rez\, it unleashes murderous beasts on the land. The family must come together to fulfill the legacy of their late husband and father by forming the Talechasers Alliance\, a storytelling resistance capable of facing forces far beyond their understanding. One that will draw them into a mythic battle that blurs the line between the past and present\, science and myth.\n\nDragonfly\nWritten by Sophia MadrigalThree Native foster siblings face the impossible: the loss of their youngest brother to the system. As they fight to keep him in their home\, they draw strength from the songs and stories of their Cahuilla heritage. Woven into their journey are the ancient Bird Songs\, the voice of their late father through a traditional lullaby\, and the legend of the Dragonfly. This project—part of the KNAPP-Tijuana and Otay River Valley revitalization effort—confronts the decades-long degradation of a region strained by environmental injustice\, economic disinvestment\, and fractured planning. The area continues to suffer from rampant pollution and an unresolved sewage crisis—a crisis exacerbated by cross-border eco-mismanagement and inadequate infrastructure. Despite ongoing negotiations\, binational planning often offers patchwork remedies to what is\, at its core\, a profound public health and ecological emergency. Shuuluk Wechuwvi responds to this crisis not with despair\, but with story. Through the mediums of live performance and visual narrative\, this play and comic seek to illuminate pathways toward collective healing and ecological repair. It is a love letter to the land and the people who refuse to let it be forgotten—calling forth a shared vision that is grounded in culture\, responsive to community\, and brave enough to demand more than short-term solutions. This is not just art—it is a call to action\, a reclamation of narrative\, and a step toward a truly binational\, community-rooted future.

DESCRIPTION:The Annual Wiyot Goutsuwe’n\, Wiyot Day\, honoring Elders and Veterans will be held on Saturday August 23rd\, 2025\, from 4:00 pm to 12:00 am at Rrawuraglu’ muk Dance grounds (“All my Relations”). \nThis gathering brings Wiyot and Native American community members\, cultural leaders\, and friends of the Tribe from all over Northern California to a one-day celebration of Wiyot Sovereignty\, cultural distinction\, and Family unification. The day will include Traditional Singers and Dancers\, Traditional Games\, Traditional Gambling\, Youth Activities\, Native American Vendors/merchandise\, Educational/Demonstration booths. \nVendor Set up begins at 2:00pm on Saturday August 23rd\, 2025. Vendors are responsible for bringing their own table\, chairs\, and (optional) canopy. Booth fees are $30 plus an item valued at least $15 donated to the raffle drawing. Applications must be received no later than Monday August 18th\, 2025. \nThe Rrawuraghu’muk Dance Grounds (“All my Relations”) are found off Phelan Road from US 101 take the Hookton Road Off-ramp\, take Hookton approximately 4.5 miles\, turn right on Phelan Road\, follow the signs. SUMMARY:Rose B. Simpson: LEXICON
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together two seemingly distinct art forms: Pueblo pottery and classic cars. In 2014\, Rose B. Simpson\, a mixed-media artist from Santa Clara Pueblo\, New Mexico\, refurbished a 1985 Chevy El Camino\, transforming it with a black-on-black Tewa pottery motif. Simpson titled her work Maria in honor of renowned artist Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo\, 1887–1980)\, who popularized the distinctive black-on-black style. Ten years later\, this exhibition debuts Simpson’s second customized car\, a 1964 Buick Riviera painted in vibrant polychrome. Both cars are presented against an expansive geometric design\, evoking the environment of the Southwest and transforming Wilsey Court into a bold\, contemporary expression of Pueblo pottery traditions. Through this use of scale and space\, Simpson forges connections between the ancestral and contemporary\, and forms a new visual vocabulary\, or lexicon\, to assert her cultural heritage and its continuity.

DESCRIPTION:San Manuel Pow Wow is a three-day celebration free to the public and features Southern California traditional bird singers and dancers\, as well as North American and Canadian dancers and drum singing groups. In addition\, there is also vending from artisans representing Indian tribal nations from all across North America and Canada. \nSince its beginning in 1996\, the San Manuel Pow Wow has remained a celebration of Indigenous cultures and a symbol or Indigenous resiliency–open to all in the spirit of friendship. \nDuring the three-day event\, the Pow Wow is a sacred space where people from across Indian Country can share their traditions\, spirituality and individual style through sounds\, motion and art. Native American dishes–such as crowd-favorite foods like fry bread–as well as a diverse array of authentic Native American traditional crafts and fine art will be available for purchase from vendors. \nThe San Manuel Pow Wow has grown to be one of the largest in Southern California with more than 20\,000 attendees. It’s free and open to the public. It’s also a reflection of the generosity of the Tribe. As Cruz Chacon did from the start\, San Manuel feeds all dancers and singers over the course of the gathering. Dancers and drum groups pay no entry fees\, and the prize money is generous. Vendors also pay no booth fees.
