SUMMARY:Jules Tavernier and the Elem Pomo
DESCRIPTION:Jules Tavernier and the Elem Pomo brings together more than seventy-five works to tell the story of Jules Tavernier (1844–1889) and his extraordinary career and encounters with Native peoples\, with a focus on his rediscovered masterwork Dance in a Subterranean Roundhouse at Clear Lake\, California (1878). The painting now returns to California for the first time in over 140 years as part of an exploration of the artist’s work through a multiplicity of voices and perspectives\, including those of Pomo cultural leaders and curators\, offering a new interpretation of Tavernier’s body of work. Pieces by Tavernier\, as well as representations of the Pomo by his contemporaries\, are presented alongside more than fifty examples of fine historic and contemporary Pomo basketry and regalia. These objects celebrate the enduring artistry and resiliency of the Pomo artists and cultural bearers and highlight their continued cultural presence in their homelands today. \n  \nhttps://deyoung.famsf.org/exhibitions/jules-tavernier?utm_medium=email&utm_source=famsfspevents&utm_campaign=education&utm_content=2021-11-19—inline1&mc_cid=85bd501626&mc_eid=875e87f285
