SUMMARY:Our Existence is Our Resistance
DESCRIPTION:“Our Existence is Our Resistance is a collection of paintings by Dr. Eric Tippeconnic\, an enrolled member of the Comanche nation and Assistant Professor in American Indian Studies here at California State University San Marcos (housed on the traditional homelands of the Luiseño/Payómkawichum peoples). The exhibition tells the story of resiliency and pride in multi-layered Native American cultures that are deeply rooted in honor and tradition\, but it also challenges the clichés of conventional understandings and representations to show contemporary and evolving Indigenous communities. This visual land acknowledgement emphasizes the living\, contemporary and dynamic culture and traditions of the communities that have belonged to this land since time immemorial.” \nCSUSM Special Collections – CSUSM University Library – California State University San Marcos \nFor more information\, visit https://biblio.csusm.edu/context-library-series/tippeconnic/

SUMMARY:"Voices from the Rez" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The La Jolla Historical Society is honored to present an exhibit of contemporary art created by Native Americans from the reservations of Southern California where San Diego County is home to eighteen reservations – more than any other county in the United States. Southern California Natives live both on and off the Rez\, upholding historic culture and traditions while concurrently inhabiting the modern world. In this exhibition\, ten artists reveal images\, ingenuity\, and unrestrained voices divulging their stories and communicating opinions through artistic expression. The medium for powerfully affirming their voices is through painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, fashion\, beadwork\, mixed media\, narrative writing\, song and performance. Works from these artists break through stereotypical barriers and open a path to share their strength\, perspectives\, and influential experience. \nFeatured artists: Chuck Contreras\, Gail Werner\, Gerald Clarke\, Gordon Johnson\, James Luna\, Jamie Okuma\, Johnny “Bear” Contreras\, Robert Freeman\, Sandra Okuma and Tracy Lee Nelson (Mataweer). \nCurated by Dana Hicks\, PhD \nFunding for this project generously provided by Patsy and David Marino; an anonymous donor; and the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians. Institutional support provided by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and by the Members of the La Jolla Historical Society. \n780 Prospect Street\, La Jolla Ca 92037 \n858-459-5335 \nhttps://lajollahistory.org/exhibitions/current-exhibitions/

SUMMARY:Writing the Land with Greg Sarris
DESCRIPTION:In person at 678 Mission Street in San Francisco or live via Zoom \nCelebrated storyteller and tribal leader Greg Sarris explores how\, despite the trauma of settler-colonialism\, Native American communities have preserved cultural heritage through the power of story and the significance of these stories in influencing our relationship with the lands where we live. Drawing from his experience writing his own “fascinating and evocative memoir in essays” (Kirkus\, starred review)\, Sarris will share insights of the Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo ancestors whose inspiration is alive in his writing. His talk will underscore the urgency of what these inherited wisdoms and the rise of Native American literature have to teach us in the era of climate breakdown. \nFor in-person registration\, visit – https://tinyurl.com/23djpfb9 \nFor online registration\, visit – https://tinyurl.com/yvmht6u4
