SUMMARY:Sherman Indian School: 100+ Years of Education and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:By the late nineteenth century\, the federal government’s efforts to fully assimilate Native Americans had proved unsuccessful. Growing concerns over the welfare of Native communities led to the establishment of twenty-five federal off-reservation boarding schools for Native American children\, where students could be formally educated and “civilized” through a strict program of academics\, vocational training\, and Christian teachings\, far away from their families and tribal communities.

SUMMARY:Native American Heritage Month Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:It is officially Native American Heritage Month\, where we pay tribute to the rich ancestry and traditions of Native Americans. \nPresident Joe Biden issued A Proclamation on Native American Heritage Month for 2023 yesterday saying\, “During National Native American Heritage Month\, we recognize the invaluable contributions of Native peoples that have shaped our country and honor the hundreds of Tribal Nations who continue exercising their inherent sovereignty as vital members of the overlapping system of governments in the United States. We also recommit to supporting Tribal sovereignty; upholding the Federal Government’s solemn trust and treaty responsibilities; and working in partnership with Tribal Nations to advance prosperity\, dignity\, and safety for all Native peoples.” \nYou can read the President’s full statement at https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/10/31/a-proclamation-on-national-native-american-heritage-month-2023/ \nAs the Chamber continues its important work of striving to create economic self-sufficiency for all of our people\, our celebration of this important month will culminate with our Native American Heritage Month Luncheon on December 1\, 2023 at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim\, California. \nYou can join us as we celebrate with cultural commemoration\, the presentation of our Prestigious Warrior Awards\, and the awarding of over $70\,000 of Chamber Scholarships to Native American students.
