Over 50 artworks are on display\, some interspersed throughout the museum\, creating unexpected encounters and dialogues between contemporary Indigenous creations and historic Autry works. Artists such as Andy Everson\, Ryan Singer and Neil Ambrose Smith wittily upend pop-culture icons by Indigenizing sci-fi characters and storylines; Wendy Red Star places Indigenous people in surreal spacescapes wearing fantastical regalia; Virgil Ortiz brings his own space odyssey\, ReVOlt 1680/2180\, to life in a new\, site-specific installation. By intermingling science fiction\, self-determination\, and Indigenous technologies across a diverse array of Native cultures\, Future Imaginaries envisions sovereign futures while countering historical myths and the ongoing impact of colonization\, including environmental degradation and toxic stereotypes.

SUMMARY:Rose B. Simpson: LEXICON
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together two seemingly distinct art forms: Pueblo pottery and classic cars. In 2014\, Rose B. Simpson\, a mixed-media artist from Santa Clara Pueblo\, New Mexico\, refurbished a 1985 Chevy El Camino\, transforming it with a black-on-black Tewa pottery motif. Simpson titled her work Maria in honor of renowned artist Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo\, 1887–1980)\, who popularized the distinctive black-on-black style. Ten years later\, this exhibition debuts Simpson’s second customized car\, a 1964 Buick Riviera painted in vibrant polychrome. Both cars are presented against an expansive geometric design\, evoking the environment of the Southwest and transforming Wilsey Court into a bold\, contemporary expression of Pueblo pottery traditions. Through this use of scale and space\, Simpson forges connections between the ancestral and contemporary\, and forms a new visual vocabulary\, or lexicon\, to assert her cultural heritage and its continuity.

DESCRIPTION:Walking In Our Moccs: Perspectives from Indigenous Artists is a community exhibition curated by Sierra Native Alliance\, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Native families\, cultures and environment in Placer County. The exhibition illuminates the experience of “walking in two worlds” through the eyes of contemporary Native American artists. Sierra Native Alliance’s Executive Director\, Anno Nakai\, states\, “Walking in Our Moccs features artwork from youth to elders and creatively illustrates the coexistence of tribal lifeways and mainstream culture\, including experiences that marginalize\, oppress\, uplift and connect Native people to sacred traditions.” \nThis dynamic exhibition includes over 45 artworks in a variety of media\, including painting\, photographs\, jewelry\, sculpture\, prints\, drawings and mixed media. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 8 | 1–4 pm\nFowler Museum at UCLA\nFree | In person \nPlease join us on February 8th from 1–4 pm at the famed Fowler Museum at the University of California\, Los Angeles\, for an afternoon of community and generosity in support of incarcerated American Indian & Indigenous relatives. The event will be hosted by UCLA American Indian Studies Centers BRAID Program (Books & Resources for American Indians in Detention). Hear directly from members of the American Indian community who have been incarcerated and from Shannon Rivers\, a Native American Spiritual Leader\, human rights activist\, and cultural advisor. \nThis gathering will create space to hear stories of struggle and resilience and enact tangible ways communities can care for our incarcerated relatives. The program will also include an opening prayer\, music and dance\, Native American vendors and resource booths\, and a guided tour of the Fowler Museum’s Fire Kinship exhibit. \nOur hope is that attendees will bring their slightly used books to donate to BRAID\, to be sent directly to incarcerated individuals. We are also seeking financial donations to support BRAIDS ongoing work\, as well as contributions to support Native American Spiritual Leaders providing cultural and spiritual guidance inside prisons.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Fowler for a special screening and conversation centered on MAATHAAW: The Fire Within Us\, an Indigenous-led documentary exploring the cultural\, emotional\, and scientific relationships Southern California Tribes have with the gift of fire. Featured in the exhibition Fire Kinship: Southern California Native Ecology & Art\, the film highlights the enduring resilience of Indigenous communities and the vibrancy of traditional ecological knowledge. As the greater Southwest faces intensifying wildfires and the escalating impacts of climate change\, MAATHAAW foregrounds Indigenous leadership in climate adaptation\, land stewardship\, and cultural revitalization. \nFollowing the screening of the extended trailer\, director and producer Andrew Pittman will be joined by Indigenous experts Wes Ruise\, William Madrigal\, and Joelene Tamm for a panel conversation on traditional fire stewardship in Southern California\, moderated by Daisy Ocampo Diaz and Lina Tejeda. Panelists will discuss cultural burning practices\, tribal approaches to vegetation management\, and how longstanding fire knowledge can inform contemporary strategies for resilience and ecological care. \nThe afternoon concludes with a demonstration and open workshop led by the California Indian Basketweaving Association (CIBA)\, exploring the relationship between fire\, ecology\, and traditional basketweaving. \nSchedule* \n12:30–1 PM – Curator-led walk-through of Fire Kinship \n1:30–2 PM – Screening of the extended trailer for MAATHAAW \n2:15–4 PM – Panel conversation in Lenart Auditorium \n4:30–6:30PM – CIBA demonstration and open workshop on the Terrace \n  \n*Schedule is subject to change. \nThis program is presented in partnership with Condor Visual Media and the American Indian Studies Center at UCLA
