Sunrise Gathering Ceremony

The Indigenous Peoples’ Day Sunrise Gathering on October 9th and November 23rd, is organized by the International Indian Treaty Council commemorating the 1969-71 occupation of Alcatraz by the Indians of All Tribes. It is a one-day events and is not the standard Alcatraz Island tour; all areas except for where the ceremony takes place will be closed and inaccessible to the public.

November 23 Event:

The ticket booth opens at 3:15 AM and boats will depart Pier 33 at approximately 4:15 AM, 4:30AM, 4:45 AM, 5:00AM, 5:15 AM, 5:30 AM, 5:45 AM, and 6:00 AM. We encourage you to purchase and print tickets on the web. Tickets can also be purchased by calling 415-981-7625 (ROCK) or from the ticket booth at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing.  General admission is $12.00 per person. Children under 5 years of age are free.

Please note there is absolutely no sale of merchandise of any kind allowed on Alcatraz Island, at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing, or on the sidewalk outside of Alcatraz Landing. Due to COVID-19 safety protocols, only credit and debit card transactions are being accepted.

Walk-up tickets will be available for purchase the morning of the event. However, tickets are limited and we can not guarantee availability the day of the event. We strongly recommend arriving as early as possible.

Dress Code

Face coverings are strongly recommended throughout your experience.

The weather on Alcatraz is unpredictable and subject to change unexpectedly, so be sure to dress in layers…bring along a light jacket or sweater, no matter how nice the day begins! Follow this link for more information.

Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing

Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing is the launch site to Alcatraz Island. All visitors must wear a proper face covering while in the boarding queue at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing and while aboard Alcatraz City Cruises’ ferries.

Alcatraz Landing includes the Ticketbooth and waiting and boarding areas, all of which are accessible. Accessible bathrooms are found at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing and on all Alcatraz Cruises vessels.

Please note: there are no wheelchairs available for loan either at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing or on Alcatraz Island.
